my friend has started to breed his harris hawks. He does it as a habby rather then to make money, but this was his first breeding year, and I have just baught one of the young and noticed a couple of fret marks on her. I told him about it and how they might have occoured and hes puzzled to say the least. He took lots and lots of advice prior to breeding the harris hawks and he ended up with a seclution pen. Young reared by both parents on a varied and high quality diet. The only time he went into the pen was to put the IBR rings on.

can anyone shed some light onto what may have caused the marks? As to me it sounds like he has given the young birds as stress free a life in the aviary as he could...

im going to get some stick off some of you for this, but here goes! i have bred 100s of birds of several species most of which im proud to say are as near perfect as you can expect, fed on quality diet and well reared, however for some reason i do get a tiny percentage that do show (minor) fret marks, i just think its one of those things.wild young are rarely perfect either mind, though thier rearing circumstances are very different of course, young birds have to grow a hell of a lot of feathers in a matter of a few short weeks compaired to 2nd yr birds taking several months to change plumage, fret marks as i prefer to call them rather than hunger traces can be caused by lots of reasons. unless they are excesivly pronounced i wouldnt be unduely alarmed.
