Bob's big day

Well, I finally got Bob the Harris out into the field for his first hunt with me yesterday. We went to a local field that I had never checked out before as I always went passed it to find the squirrels and trees. I drove out into the field and it was about half overgrown with ragweed so my allergies went ape s**t right away......Took out Bob, beeped him up, unhooded him, he glared at me and hauled arse off the fist. He took a lazy circle flight to check out the area and then headed back to me to land on the fist. Minutes later, I bumped a big rabbit but it ran straight into cover with Bob slamming on the brakes at the last second. He circled around for a minute trying to locate the bunny and then came back to the fist. He was sitting tall on the fist and scanning intently for dinner to run out in front of him when I bumped bunny #2...chase was on. Bob was pumping hard and closing in until he made an attempt and got stopped in his tracks by the tall weeds and the bunny happily skipped away, laughing.....taunting me....( I'll get that ******* next time). I started working the brush along a river bank towards my truck when I bumped bunny #3 well ahead of me. Bob took flight and was closing in when all of a sudden the bunny ran under my truck....no biggy right? ......wrong......ya see, Bob has an issue with females(I think it's the long hair) for some reason and will not go near them if they where holding a whole plate of rabbit meat. Well, my girlfriend happend to be sitting on the front bumper of my truck.......so....that rabbit got away as Bob took light in a tree nearby. I called him to the lure and he came instantly down, traded off great and hopped to the fist. Not bad for a first hunt I'd say......he chased, he stayed in the area and I got him back......all good....then I was forced to go to Hooters to celebrate with some free beer and a big plate of hot wings 3 mile island.......life is rough....

Sounds like you had a good do then mate!..........Like you said at least he tried.........As for being scared of women you sure its not the misses.........Shes enough to scare owt.......Only joking mate :) ......All the best

That sounds like it was a good walk what weight is your male flying at
mine has to go down to 1lb 5 oz to chase anthing bigger than a mouse.
Female on the other hand takes hares at 2lb 9oz she missed her first hare
yesterday good chase but made the fence just as she it its back end
maybe get it at weekend?

How do you know she catches hares at 2lb 9oz if she hasnt had 1 yet...........You might find that once she's caught 1 she won't try again once its thrown her about a bit

My little boy is flying at 530grams which is about 1lb 2.5 oz and I think he need to be dropped a tad more. I may drop him to 520 and see what he does.

Now that you got him going you need a dog. When you're use to pile driving RTs a tiercel HH has a comparatively hard time in thick cover. Refushes on rabbits is where it's at with Harris Hawks. See ya Saturday.

What time are you going to be there? A guy is coming in from Louisiana today with a cast of Harris's and I beleive that Laura, him and I may try to fly all four birds in a cast if they will cooperate. I am going to hunt him again this afternoon at the same field as yesterday if they are not going to hunt tonight.

Since I want to Kite Fly my peregrine I wasn't planning on being there until lunch, then spend a few hours hawkin'. The reason why I don't want to get there bright and early is I don't want my bird to sit in the truck all day. I'd like to fly around 5 o'clock. Hope there will be enough wind for the kite?!
