If he's got telemetry on, now will be a good time to track him. He'll be roosting and easier to pin point. Good luck, he'll be back soon.

Ive got bells on him yeah,
He was on the fist and a string gust of wind lifted him, he felt the wind a bated, the jesses sliped out  and he went downwind out of sight. Ive foned the ibr too. the other thing to my advantage is, where i lost him is near a field i have flown him to the lure a few times. plan is to go back to where he sliped off and walk the way the wind was blowing, try this a few times, then go around every farm in a 5 mile radious, going to make some leaflets tonight

Good luck Sean, I was flying at a farm today and they were telling me how they caught a lost falcon by swinging a frozen rabbit around above they heads, the falcon took it and they managed to get it into a shed and return it to it's owner.(They were delighted with themselves). I'm sure you'll get him back soon.

sean: my dear beloved birdie, i luv u so much, so pls dont leave me, im letting u go, my dear lad i trained u and manned u so dont leave me in the lurch and find me a bunny

good advice there but quote "moses naff off weve all done it" sorry but speak for yourself cos i aint done it, telemetry was the first thing i got (before i even got my harris) as it is one of the most important pieces of equipment for falconry (my opinion), i aint got much money but i saved untill i could afford, sorry but this is just my opinion and i feel this is a good lesson for others to learn from, a lot of people think that harris's don't need telemetry but like this has shown it only takes a gust of wind etc to make them bate , and sean really sorry to hear this bad news but just think of the joy when you get him back ;-) chin up m8

I always use telemetry, as the various people that have been hunting with me from this site will testify...and find it false economy not to have it use it and make sure the batteries are fully charged and check its working order before the bird is even kitted up with it...I cannot expect every body to be as anal as me ...and people make mistakes ... not learning from those mistakes is unforgivable...making the mistake in the first place is...I just didnt think he needed me preaching about telemetry too much when he will be kicking himself to death about it untill he gets his hawk safley back on the fist.... granted not every body has made the mistake ...but there are a hell of lot of experienced falconers out there that have made the mistake.... and lived to tell the tale....this doesnt make it right....just real... hopefully the bird will have knocked a bit of weight off in the night and be looking for you in the morning as much as your looking for him... my fingers are crossed...

I must confess, I never used telemetry on HH until a couple of years ago even though I did own and use it with longwings. I've been lucky and never lost one for more than a few minutes.

Any news yet Sean?

sorry to hear about your loss buddy, chin up mate i'm sure as hunterpaul said his weight will be a bit sharper after a night or two out on his own and he'll be looking for you aswel. with regards to telemetry, yes it is important but i personally made sure i did a year without it to improve my field craft with finding a wandering bird, 's a risk but helps alot should telemetry fail sometime, have had a few occasions where my FHH had ******ed off on the chase and i had no clue where she'd gone, only to find her marking a hole where a wabbit had ran into, just looking out for the corvids helps alot as they're a tell tale sign of a hawks wanderings.

Best of Luck Mate! Keep us posted.

Sean hope you find the bird i lost mine with telemetry on just could not find a signal this was with a Marshall's.
I've got a Luksnader 10 channel for sale with 1 transmitter and new aerials which i will post latter on.
I still havent got my bird back its over 8 weeks.
Chin up and what will be will be.
All the best.

I really do hope you find your hawk sean it is a really shame BUT i hope everyone reading this reallises the need to use telemetry on your hawks yes you can still lose them and have failures BUT telemetry reduces the risks and gets birds back even if you only buy a transmitter and a mate have a reciever you can use a scanner to check for signal and away you go sorry to rant on but if only one person takes note itll be worth it buy you telemetry practice then buy the bird...... once again i really do hope you find him ive had bird out over night tracked down to trees and even then its hard.... all the best

The folly of an inexperienced austringer flying a young hawk in windy conditions without telemetry was perfectly illustrated in CZ's Red Tail thread.

I'm sure precious few (probably none) newbies will have heeded the advice given then that you reiterate now.

Good luck Sean.

hi guys, just to let use kknow, i got him back, late afternoon. a young lad foned me and said he knew where it was. id put up my number in shops and chipes the night before you see. when i got there he was screaming and screaming (sort of a give away lol, altho he never screams in the field) there was abotu 20 kids standing on point making sure the knew where he goes lol, when i got there i swung the lure and he came(he mantled for the first time too?) then let the kids hold him for a wee bit and showed him flying(on the line, just incase lol) to the lure and things. he didnt mantle the second time on the lure. it really made my day and im sure it made the kids day. i gave teh fella who phoned me and the fella who found it originally a few quid also lol. all set for the field meet this weekend then! yeehaa

your quite right blackbird every serious falconer should have a set but you would be gobsmacked by the number of h/hawks being flown around here and very few use telemetry, all i would say on the subject is telemetry is not magic it doesnt get your bird back it only helps you locate it, the number of people up here who have lost birds with it on and never seen them again is eqully gobsmacking.so to anyone new to telemetry i would advise practice practise and more practise coz its not magic and is far from perfect, dont underestimate good basic fieldcraft as well in recovering your bird, ive seen loads of people as soon as the bird is out of site ,telemetry out and off on a wild goose chase often if you keep your head and use some common sense itll not be that far away or even return looking for you,so anyone new to it, please experiment loads before actually using it as i think to many people think you stick it on the bird press a button when you need to and hey presto the bird reappears on your glove.

Talon
01-11-2005, 12:23 AM
we should do a poll to see how many ppl on her use telemtry and how many dont thats if the ones who dont admit to it.?

Barbary Boy
01-11-2005, 12:28 AM
the point i was trying to make is ,its not just a case of having it but having the expertice to use it effectivly. if you see what i mean.

Talon
01-11-2005, 12:35 AM
i know what you mean bb.
but just wandering how many actauly fly birds with out telem.
as most of the hh ppl i know dont bother .
its the same old story you hear .you dont need them with hh. so they think.
..and yes i do have telem.

i just want beginers to realise its not perfect and takes a while to get used to it has its faults and doesnt allways work as well as some people think.i dont want to keep repeating myself but really guys PRACTICE loads with it 1st.

a very good idea to practise...youd be surprised (or maybe not) how many hawks get lost wearing telemetry...and when asked what channel the tag is on or whatever they look at you dumb...some people just dont know how to use there particular system...get a mate to take the tag out one day, hide it and then simply go find it....if that seems too much bother ... bin the tag and the system cos it is useless to a lazy **** like that...
