View Full Version : Predator Hunting (Another Fox in the bag)

Shortly after lunch (13:00hrs) I went out to have a look at my bait sites and was lucky to see this Red Fox in the open fields at ± 1000 feet from me. I shot and hit him but not deadly so I had to track him down for a distance before I can see him again and finish the job. I hunt with a .22-250 win with winchester ammo 55gr bullet power point. I find this caliber to be rather too much strong for anything smaller than a coyote though.

Dan, nice going there my friend and what a fabulous environment to be hunting in. I use a 22/250 with 55 grain federal high shock bullets and find this an excellent round for this work. 22/250 is my recomended calibre for fox work.

Hi Graham, I might get a .223 or .204 for fox hunt and keep .22-250 for coyotes even though it can do the job but I'm looking after a caliber that will not damage hide as much as possible.
Alec, the dog will point, track or do what ever I need him to do. Most of the time I use him to move things from cover

no offence dan but you need to work on your accuracy. you shouldnt be shooting at things if you cant kill them 1st shot. atb

Nice, i have 2 GSP's over here in South Africa ,i shoot alot of Jackal my side and use a 243 win mag, its as fast as any of the others with a 55 grain bullet, but i prefer it with 80 grain noslers.....

1000 ft , thats some distance, i would never consider tacking a shot at that sort of distance on live quarry. all my foxing is done from 30 - 70yrds, i do have problems with foxes getting too close, i use the primos predator call, it works so well that i often get mr fox within 15 - 20ft, far too close for my liking, its very easy to loose concentration at close ranges and forget about things like ricochets or backstops.
i also find the 22-250 a bit "explosive" causing alot of damage to the pelt/skin. i get a cleaner plet / skin from 243, 270 or 30,06 pushing 100grains+
:supz:send pics aman, do you hunt them at night ?
I have shot them both Day and night...I will have to scratch some pics out for you. I will be shooting some soon and will most definatly post some pics (on this thread)
Here is a Pick of a young one that my GSP's grabbed, no 243 needed :supz:

shooting from a close distance is no thrill to me. I like to perform very long shots...limits.
I also do something with every kill I make either with raptors or rifles. In this case every fox and coyote skins will be tanned and fill a usefull purpose anyway.
UglyBear
09-02-2010, 08:01 AM
Dan some of these are close some are 300 meters plus I have not got much ground where you can shoot over Longe distances.. As the fur trade here in the uk, has no market for fur we do the foxes just for control.
if i could still get £25 per skin id have me wires set everywhere.....
or they would be shot in the head... 25 years ago you would not see a fox shot .. Id rather trap than shoot, shooting to me is the lazy way of control but effective...... at least with traps there working 24hrs and it doesnt damage the coats if you wanted to use them....

"shooting from a close distance is no thrill to me. I like to perform very long shots...limits."
long range shots result in wounded animals, as you have stated in your posts you have to track your prey after you have wounded it. i personally feel and have been taught that this is not acceptable, it shows no respect to your quarry. i do get a thrill of shooting long distances, 1000+ yrds at static targets, but i get no thrill from or pay from my employers for either missing a fox, or wounding one.
for me the thrill is getting close enough to my prey to guarantee that i do the job properly, profesionaly and cleanly, i find this the challenge and the skill.
very different opinions hey!

Hi Rich,
Dan obviously doesn't agree with you, but I think you make a good point. The real skill lies in the fieldcraft that enables the shot to be taken with near certain results.
Best wishes,
Tony.

this is for the know it all's
you guys don't get it obviously as it all depends of the way you hunt. If I'm roving with my snowmachine and my GSP (for example) and shoot foxes and yotes escaping, and if I fail to hit target or injured one the dog will track it down and kill it anyway. I do not make them to come in with a call or decoy or whatever during early winter only when breeding season starts in mid Feb. There is always 360° / 3D to look at things..may I suggest you leave this thread to what it has been created: Show your catch.
Who's right Who's wrong I don't give a Damn. I just don't want to argue I want to share with people like Calvin, Yann and others who are not looking after the black beast all the time as anyway I have killed the black beast a while ago with a long shot of 3000 meters with my .25mm machine gun mounted on a Coyote.. Bah !
Who called me...Rambo again,

More over Justin, hunting in deep snow is not the same game. We can track them for miles with snowmachines and let go the dog when getting close to get them out in the open for us and shoot. If we fail, the dog will get it again...
I hunt them for fur but also to free pressure on small game populations locally for my falconry season. We are infested with foxes and coyotes for lack of trappers new generation. Anyway I'll keep this trhead going untill early March, after it's breeding season that starts and I'll be too busy for anything else...

Dan,
I can walk out my door, throw a snowball and hit a fox.
Nobody traps or shoots them here. What's worse, the greenies and bunnyhuggers are feeding the Gdamn things! They've become tourist attractions. Tourist attractions that circle my mews, trying to find a way inside.
My place is no longer a place for any fox to come poking around.

Keep harverting them Dan!
Long distance shooting, short distance shooting... it's anybody's game in the sense you do what you like to do.
I don't know of anyone who's goal it is to "wing" a duck while shooting...but it HAPPENS... we all like to see the bird "fold" and drop like a stone but no matter how much practice you do, how many clays you break you'll end up injuring some. Being responsible matters though...track the wounded, dispatch and use.
I simply fail to see the need for some to berate, put down, or otherwise imply malintent on other's legal and responsible hunting practices.
I've got a story and will scan the pic that backs it up. My family's house is in agricultural land... My mom asked , some years ago, that I'd bring my .22 to rid her garden of a marauding woodchuck. I did go and visit, but forgot the gun. I did have the compound bow in the car's trunk and the varmit had been sited. The groundhog was by it's hole and dove in...I was 20-25 meters away and no way in hell would it allow me to get a close shot... but walking around, it changed my angle and saw that the little b ooger was there, just the head sticking out to watch me. I drew the bow, aimed and took the shot. Nailed him in the head but it kept on moving. it was dispatched rapidly. It had to be taken out as it was being a nuisance. no remorse.
pic coming soon.

Harold ive done both in a full time capacity and i must say i enjoyed the deer management more as a job .. it was more demanding.. in every aspct.
Flying falcons/hawks around landfill and shopping mauls is not my cup of tea..
I enjoy flying the birds now as soley a bit of fun,,,,..And its something i can do with my 2 daughters.

I noticed how poor the coat was on my fox. It was frizzy, almost like there was some sort of Japanese Spitz-type dog in there somewhere. Very thick undercoat. I dodn't shoot him. He came to his end by other means which I'm not at liberty to discuss on the forum, lest the man come a-knockin'!

Dan theres a wildlife centre by me and one of the girls that works there brought some new wellies in bright colours.
when she went in to clean them out one of them took a dislike to the wellies and she got squirted on. the smell was horendous...
she ws not best pleased but it made us chuckle for a good hr.

I did not hunt last night, I've simply secured my grounds ie: the aviaries, the dogs, the kids and so on...
Bow hunting is fair but I prefer hunting with my birds when it comes to real hunting sport. For big games, I likes guns and for cleaning up an area of predators aswell.

Hi guys hi Dean a few questions and thoughts to all of you.
Dan i only took a short view but did not found any question about reticle that you got in your 22-250. I suppose that should be some bone & crocket or mill dot. If not..shooting at that kinda distance is..wow. Do You also hunt at night? I heard that in US its mostly forbidden. That's why those scopes of american manufacturers do not fit to European night style hunting. We believe only in the great 4 - Kahles, Svarowski, Zeiss and S&B. Others are no competition. In my country we can hunt only up to 200 metres (650feet) and with no silencer. For fox hunting there are only 2 main calibres 222 and 223 some also use 243 thought it is only good when the distance is over 150 metres, if the distance is shorter high speed makes it destructive on roe not mentioning about fox. The big disadvantage of 222 is the wind susceptibility. The other ones are a bit better but not perfect, especially on border distance. Could anyone compare 220 swift and 22-250? On balistic calculator they seem to be twins. Both fast deadly and destructive for both animals and barrel. If the ammo was in a good price and bigger variation i would try 204 ruger as varmint cartridge. I'm very interested how do you compare it guys with straight 223 rem. Is it really outperforming 223 in the distance up to 700feet? How about barrel destruction, i heard its not that bad.
To those who hunt with distressers and mouse whistles what kinda lures do you use? In Poland scotch predator seems to be number one, not just because its easy to use..but i found that - YouTube- Foxing with Robert Bucknell 1: fox calls any oppininons from UK..UglyBear?

well ive watched and swithed it off it bored me to tears on that one fox he shot it was app 30 40 yds.... the best squick is a imatation mouse
rabbit squicks work some times but the mouse squick always seems to stop them .......
squicky toy cheap and effective..
The best foxing cartridge i find is a 222. great little round this is my personal favorite...
6.55x55 is my next 85g hollow points.... or 140g for deer
Then theres the big trusty 308 for those windy days when you want to realy make a mess:lol:

pes kenedy was shot with the 6.5x57 so it goes to show that there good for long range.
if your all checked in comfy and your got a scope to match the quality of shooter there shouldnt be any exscuse for missing,
if your grouping on the target is up or down this is normaly powder loads a bit insificient if its left to right then its normaly you pulling.
all i can say about shooting a rifle is practice . practice . practice .

03-04-2010, 04:57 AM
...yes practice I agree but,, my biggest concern is the ammo. I never buy express rounds only premiums, supremes or the top of the cap stone : Norma High Quality Diamond Matchgrade ammo made in Sweden
John on my .22-250 I have a Busnell Elite 3200 scope 3x10x50mm (a hunting scope) On my .308 I have a reticule Mildot MOA (minute of angle) with paralax 6x25x56mm made by Millet USA but the whole outfit weighs 15 pounds: Rifle, Bipod, Sling, Scope and laser/ led light...both are sniper rifles & Bull barrel just to mention these ones.

Dan i use the SSG POLICE sniper rifle one of the most accurate of the shelf rifles the only draw back with them is the magazines are rubbish there plastic and if you drop them they break.
SWARVOSKI scopes with the tds rticule comes all charted up and as i load my own bullets i cronograph them to get the right velocity to the graph.
Now my 6.5x55 is a RUGER NO1 on the good old falling block not sure why i got it but its a gentlemans rifle and im no gentleman ... lol
but all in all i had a shillinghamh barrel put on this with a brilliant scope mount ive had this nearly 15 years and its still going well
you cant beat a ruger no1 for build quality and acccuracy the no 1 are the only recorded rifle that have never blown up under presure.... I think.

Nice whats the distance? 243 is not the best cartridge for fox hunting in opinion of many users, it's good when the distance is over 150meters thats what itwas made 4, if not its just too fast and destructive . Personaly i prize old 6,5 much more. It's accurate, powerful enought to be called ''allrounder'', though 243 is also permitted 4 stags but whoever tries has no respect for those animals impo. You can get 243 bullets up to 6grams mostly, 6,5X55 such as lapua mega reach 10 grams and thats priceless when hunting bigger game.

The fox was hundred and eighty meters. And it was shot in the mouth.
The. Two four three is a good round. Me personally use a 65x55. Its not the bullet that kills its the accuracy oy the shooter

no wonder people in Quebec would like to fly goldies...all that flat farmland with foxes!
her majesty the queen will never allowed us to do it,, so one better take his sovereinity and independance back and just do it.
chukkers are good quarry aswell for the goldies... or with the M10 BAS-K

Dan whats the 550 like for performance compared to 338 lap and the 50 cal
nothing to compare...the model is a SIG SG 550 by Swiss Arms...the caliber is a 5.56x45mm NATO. but I shoot .223 win ammo 55gr either supreme winchester, federal gold or Hornady. Grouping 3/4 of an inch at 100m and 2"inches at 200meter. The scope is a Elcan X3.4 fix that we have in the military in Canada. I've been working with since 22 years and find it good for target or predator hunting at medium range. One last word with this assault rifle= ACCURACY ! heavy barrel 21" rate twist 1:10, 6 riffling canelure

Got you thought you had gone and got yourself something big ..lol when you said 550 ..lol
shot these with 243 .. not my choice of gun .. but as i took a couple of lads out i kindly obliged....
ive used hornady v max or a cant remember in 308 thats good out to 500 meters im not looking to much at grouping just a chest shot will do nicely...
The 6.5x55 my favorite i use sierra 85 hp through that for foxes 46g of vict fed match primers or 46 g hodgdons 4831 ... both of these loads work well in the 308 with 155g bullets... cant go wrong when reloading ..lol

I was as impressed with the knives as i was the sheafs and leather work all done and made with natural materials and the edge on the knives was as good as i could get one .... very impressed and even more impressive was there solidarity / company / and hospitality ...
The red deer out there are amoungst some of the biggest in the world i had an oppertunity to shoot one but was unable to do so as they shoot from a high seat under darkness and there was a slight mist .
the rifle was a 30.06 and the scopes had a thick post going into a point the red stag was 200m as id range finded all the points prior to hunting but on this occasion the lamp we used was lacking in power the mist had blown in slightly and all i could pick out was a set of eyes 3 time i raised that gun poised to pull the triger .. dam and blast was a polite way of putting my fury ....
But hey better to have not taken the shot, and wounded or mist...
