what are u guys using?youd think after all these yrs id have found the ideal set but i havent, ive tried counter balance, electronic ive even got in the back of the shed a set of those giant greengrocers ones that give you the price per pound on the dial at the back? i currently use a small set of electronic kitchen scales but find it difficult getting the bird to lye on its back in the bowl,no seriously they are fine for my little barbaries in the late summer but i am finding them a little small for a large female h/hawk this time of year, what are you using and are you happy with them? are they accurate and most of all are they consistant? i will be gratefull for your views, thanks/

got 2 pairs of cheap electronic Argos scales. Used a paint roller as a perch on them. Also got a very old pair of hefty kitchen balance scales. Friend cut me some 1/8 an 1/16 weights, but find the electronics easier unless a bird gets a bit too keen and then they tend to get knocked over.

never used electric ones for the bop but when mentioned it to my pal he said that when they get cold the lcd sceens can f**k up so to stay away from them, similar to a caculator. I think it been said before the electric ones are a bit light for the larger bop and can topple them over.

Old fashioned kitchen scales.......Dont bother to have small weights cut....a 2 pence piece is 1/4 ounze...a 1 pence piece 1/8 ounze.

lol.... everybody has small change, that's all i can usually ****in find, my girlfriend usually pinches the rest! thievin lil minx hehe have always used balance scales myself, they're reliable all the time and have a more 'hands on' feel. Altho i do use electronics to weigh her meat out.

sympathise with you there buddy, i hate the smell of gutting a fresh rabbit so the smell of a rotten one would def make me vom. still haven't tried eating any rabbit myself cos of the smell when gutting them, put me right off hehe altho i'm told they taste great.

i have a pair of electronic and balance scails. I have taken to using the electronic ones for ease but always put say an 1oz weight on which i keep near them before weighing the bird to check as i wouldn't want to get the weights wrong as i'm sure u know it can be costly!!!

i use eletronic scales they are salter weight up to 5lb and as little as 1/6 oz ,to check they are working fine i just pop a 2 pence on then which weighs 1/4 oz then pop a few for on to make sure there ok this takes seconds to do,i had some of the old weight scales didnt like them so sold them ,all i did with the salter scales was made a base out of mdf glued it to the metal base and put a t perch on it ,both my male harris and female red are weighed on this without any probs

just a thought but even if scales are wrong tho as long as the error is consistent each time you weigh, weight control should still be the same, provided you only use the same scales.

True, but the electronic ones have a battery and when that starts to go, you get all kinds of odd results. Must admit, I find the electronic much easier than puting weights on and off the balance one. I just get it correct and the bird starts fidgeting. The electronics always check out accurate, and if I'm not sure I stand one pair on the base of the other and hey presto double checked. The only anti is they are lite weight and can fall over with a big bird.

Its been mentioned in another thread...........
Ive put my scales on a heavy shelf on the side of my shed under the window.
She jumps leash length onto the scales, shouting to me COME ON COME ON LETS GET GOING THEN......Then she spots her reflection. She just wont budge...You can fart about as long as you want weighing her...Wonder what shes thinking.............IVE LOST A BIT OF WEIGHT I THINK.DO THESE ANKLETS MAKE ME LOOK FAT...? Typical woman....

If my bird spots its reflection it goes for the kill. Its tried murdering the car wing mirror and a car window when the light was in the wrong direction !!!

Hi BB

I use a set of electronic scales from Ben Long.

The scales come complete with a very rigid perch, which is ideal for all sizes of birds.

They are not cheap thou:mad:, but I have never had any problems with them, and they are more accurate than the ones available from Argos etc.

these are on ebay at around 30 quid but can be made easily with scales from argos for 10-15 quid, keep them inside ans change battery regularly then no probs;)

I've got a set of Ben Long balance scales, very accurate , very heavy and not at all cheap. However, well worth it as even my 4lb 5oz EEO can't tip them over!

Which in your opinions are the more reliable and accurate form of weighing scales, digital or the balance type with a selection of loose weights as it so important aspect of hawk ownership dont want to be cutting corners as i have read in threads half ounce can make a difference.........Thank you.
