i would just like to share some advice that was given to me when i first started looking at getting into falconry seriously and I have stuck with throughout so much so i do a 100mile round trip to get my help
Once you have found a so called mentor ( hopefully you have found a good one ) stick to their ways the one thing any teacher hates is the student asking questions, getting answers and going off doing what someone else says.
hopefully this makes sence
if i see anything intresting on this forum i first put the idea to my now good friend, but i must say this forum is also a great way to gain a variety of views
sorry if i am blethering aload of *****

funny that mate ive given lots of sound advise to a few falconers who have asked for help only to go and do the oppposite because someone else happens to mention it and rather than stick to one method through out be it mine or someone elses tried to do it all result f--d up birds.. then ask for help how to reverse what they have done .....this has happened on more than one occasion....sound advise pitbull

like you say, depends on who your mentor is?there are plenty of falconers out there who have been bad falconers for years passing on bad advice to unknowing beginners?

the funny thing is the falconer that gave me this advice is or was a member of the bfc is only down the road from me but i felt i had more in common with the other falconer 50miles away, and as of this moment all is well both run falconry centres

i agree there. i am not a member of any club but i do think it helps if you have something in common with your teacher, aswell as folconry

My advice is: Take as many advice as you can, read as many books as you feel you can cope with (not everyone find it easy to read factuall books). When you done this, use your comon sense and take the advice that you think fits you, your bird and your circomstanses.
We are working with induvidualls, every hh, falcon, gos, rt etc. is diffrent from the next, all are individualls and should be treated as such.
No one can say what is 100% right ore wrong, if you reach the same result, then there is many right ways of doing it :yawinkle:

do you realise that if you join the B F C you will be expected to wear a shirt and tie just to feed your birds? moleskin pants brogue shoes and full tweeds are expected the rest of the time? no laughing or fun of any kind to be observed throughout any field meet, formal or informal,it wont matter if you fly your bird or not, any excuse will do as long as you look the part. hope that helped?

you know what makes me laugh? every article you read on falconry starts, as a falconer of 12yrs 5mths and 23 days!! so fu**ing what!! ive been driving for nearly 30 yrs doesnt mean im a good driver! begginers beware???? there are a lot of centers out there where the people running them have flown birds for a little while but are not falconers, youve been warned!

I also prefer to look the part when feeding my birds, after all they deserve it, which is why I wear the full length ball gown (green of course), gloves and tiara. Its a ****** to climb over barbed wire fences in, but its worth it just to ensure I look the tart.......errr I mean part.
Best piece of advice I can pass onto women falconers - the necessity of a sports bra, and the ability to pee behind a bush with the hawk still on your fist!

Poor pit bull, we are completely ruening his thread, I did start off trying to be serious, but just as always you get more response talking about certein body parts then you do when you try to be serious,
CONCLUSION:
Men always think about ore ascociate with sex
men falconers rather discuss sex and body parts then falconry..
Falconry forum have a majority of men...
I wake up every morning and thank god Im a woman......

I just read this lot
MENTOR! lets get one thing straight, i've only been going two minutes, but when i started out, a mentor was never ever mentioned! the forum at that point was only young also, now that we have a large u.s membership, which each and everyone had to have a mentor, all of a sudden all the brits need em aswell, and 99% of first answer's to newbies is get a mentor, i never had a mentor! unless you count martin hollinsheads books, neil forbes' Emails and nick fox' dvd's, i also havnt met localy an active falconer who understands catching rabbits aswell as i do! infact the first time i listened to a "MENTOR" i lost me FN bird, and that was NEHH, so this mentor ****, if someone plays football from the age of five untill retirement but only ever gets good enough to play for the pub team, what's the point in learning to play football from him, if you want to be good at somthing learn from them that are good, not the nearest person with a bird!
i just noticed the dates.........am i in a time warp!
lol that explains the ban on barbary :) though the moderator shouldnt of been exempt especially when she went down to his level
