On the look out for a 4x4 sometime something practical, that can be used for everday use as well. Seems a lot to choose from, what can people recommend?

Cheers,

HH

I've got a Suzuki Jimny which is excellent on road and off. Its a bit small if you need to use it for family purposes though.

Never needed the use of a 4x4 for hawking, as i usually park in the farmyard and walk. No land I fly on requires it and an estate car is my best option.

Best to go off road on decent tyres....you still cant beat the old SJ410s either, even my bloke a hardened Landrover driver has some respect for them!

I drive a discoveryTD5 and have owned it for 3 years ,it has done me fine both on and off road never got me stuck. Can be expensive for parts though.
I test drove the new nissan navara last week and that really impressed me on both power and off road capability.

Can't say as i'm that bothered about fuel consumption, just that it is a superb vehicle and performs just how I want it to.

my chosen chariot is a 300tdi discovery which gets just about everywhere on its road tyres.
When the going gets really tough though, the secret weapon is an 88 inch 1971 land rover series 3. noisy, rattley and draughty.. but there is no carpet to worry about dirtying and it WILL go anywhere!
Oh at £100 fully comp (classic) and a free tax disc each year, its well worth holding on to!

Land Rovers all the way, wax oil it tinker if you will but they just keep going. If your looking for economy think about a V8! Cheap to buy, convert to gas, hey presto 35.9p per litre. Oh and if your like me fit raised suspension, 31inch tyres, tune it up, under body protection. Oops sorry whent off on one....

I like my Ford Ranger, good enough for fram tracks and fields, plenty of space in the back for lots of birds, ferrets etc. Only does about 30 to the gallon, but that is the same as all 4x4.

Yes Andy, it's mine...and it is what itsays on the tin:yawinkle: Tata Safari EX; full leather interior, side steps, 'bull bar' on the front and rear spoiler and 7 seats. 400 miles on a full 60 ltr. tank, on a run.

Only being a 2.0l TDi, it is a tad under powered but it does me for what I want, and I've had to give my shooting partner a tow with his Defender 90 before now;)

The base model cloth interior and without the above is £14k.

About time too - had a brand new TD4 as a courtesy car for my 1st service - Told them that "They should be banned", service department laughed saying "I'd been spoilt".

They are bringing out the Freelander 2006, alot beefier with a shortened Disco 3 chasis, going to be longer with a proper boot and terrain response. Read that somewhere, so early days.

Is that for me Lee?........................no it's switchable; normal road use is 2 wheel x front wheel drive. Switch over to 4x4 high, for general off roading and 4x4 low for 'heavy' off roading/snow etc...................... to date, I've not got stuck anywhere and I've been upto the steps in cow-****/slurry:twisted:

I use a Skoda Octavia 4x4 estate. They've raised the suspension for the 4x4 so it copes off road, and they use the engine from the Audi TT (as Skoda are part of VW Audi) so it goes like stink. It has a huge boot so I can fit the travelling box and all my stuff in. Obviously it's not up to serious off-roading, but I only need to get up muddy, rutted farm tracks or into fields, and it handles that easily. Having used a Disco before this, it drives a lot better and has much better fuel economy. When I had the Disco I never felt I went anywhere that only the Disco could cope with, and it rusted to hell. Certainly don't regret changing.
