As u can c the footings have now been dug out and filled with Concrete, ready for the Block work. The earth in the middle of the square is being removed for the drainage purposes slopeing more to the front than the rear. This is where i would like advise please i was going to then put a layer of Hardcore or brick rubble on top once i have found the level i am happy with followed by wire then Pea Gravel been advised to have weep holes in the block work for drainage purposes also... Would it be adviseable to put like that blue Damp Proof plastic down prior to putting Hardcore down obviously makeing holes in the plastic for soak away.. Any advise on how deep the Pea Gravel needs to be please. Any other opinion's on Drainage would also be appreciated

Nice one jon..... glad to see work has started for you there, good of heike to help you out there bud. I wouldn't have been able to till next year. personally i would fill it with a good 7 inch of hardcore (crush and run) pack it down and then top with 4 inch of pea gravel drains thru no problem and provides a good solid base. keep us posted.

You could finish your Mews a bit like the attached Image Ninja-J.
It might look a bit fancy but it's so easy to clean and never smells.
Don't forget the electrics down to the bird room and a light into the flight controlled by a dimmer switch.
Much better than putting your bird into complete darkness at the flick of a switch come winter time.
Hope this is of help.

aye lookin good there jon mate - just remember that when fillin with hardcore and gravel to section off the weighing room part (if there's going to be one, as you may have another room allocated for that) so you can put decking down or a concrete floor, i have the aviary hardcored and pea graveled and the weighing room on timber decking on the hardcore base. let me know if you want any advice mate. qualified carpenter/joiner so i'll help any way i can mate.
Heike
15-11-2005, 05:42 PM
Looking good ninja-jon, the soil bit left must be the weighing room part, dig that out as well and bottom it up too, but no gravel and this will be good for the timber floor on blocks to sit on, also a good idea to get the gravel in but not spread, as this will be easier for access before the building is in the way, the building is in production this week, when would you like it fitted (e mail me)
Cheers Heike

Hi Simon regards drainage M8 it was suggested to me to do the following which i have done. Dug out approx 2 foot of earth @ the back slopeing down to 3 half foot @ the front then packed it with loads of concreate rubble followed by Hardcore then obvious your finished substrate was told this one be sufficent for drainage, acting like a soak away i presume.

Thanks to Ninja Jon for the buisiness of supplying and fitting his new aviary, its a small world, turns out Jon & my mate Alan, are both kawasaki nuts and were bidding on ebay for the same set of wheels a while back,
I wouldnt like to have to travel in Engurland too often, inconsiderate of the police to close the M1 just as we were approaching that junction and the ensuing chaos delayed us by four and a half hours, so made it a long day.
Again thanks to Jon & Jane for the job and the supply of coffe (nae whisky)
here are some pics i got before dark but sure Jon will have some more.
Cheers Heike

Hi Helen, its the builder here, the four sides are fixed to the blockwork with (frame fixings) big rawlplugs basicaly, before the lining went on so Jon wont even know they are there.
