I'm the gaffer so I dont get that problem:lol:

During Winter it would obviously only leave you Sat and Sun Moses, so that would be 2 days:roll: . Unless you could lamp the bird, then 7 days a week.

I am lucky like Hawka, and i work from home, so i fly the harris in daylight and the owl when its dark, but can appreciate it must be difficult for most 9 - 5 type jobs, for people to get daylight hours to fly their birds.

I have an Owl and a Hawk to fly this season so it will be one in the morning Sat and Sun and one in the afternoon weather permitting!!

im lucky coz i get afternoons aff maybe twice a week or more sometimes plus the evenings

I fly seven days aweek weather permitting.
Some days its an hour, some days its eight <vbg>
(I am blessed in as much that my permission is 200 yards from my front door)

If I couldnt fly seven days a week I would not fly accipiters hence falconry would not be a sport that I could practice <g>

For those that cannot find the time for this level of commitment due to work constraints, here is a tip.

Apply to your boss for child freindly hours.

The one gift made to falconers by this crappy labour government is that if you apply you cannot be refused this request

I fly the Raptor Foundation's birds twice a week - I know I wouldn't be able to devote the time necessary to having a bird of my own so doing voluntary work there and being allowed to fly is a fantastic second prize!

I havent voted on the poll.....I work 12 hr shifts 8 till 8 4 days on 4 off then 4 nights & then 4 off & then 4 days etc......
the only time the bird doesnt get flown is when Iam on day shift or **** weather....when on nights i get out of bed for 1pm to let him have at least an hour flyin...so this means he is flown 12 days on the trot when iam on nights because of the 4 rest days before & after.

I guess I am the lucky one. I get paid to fly birds 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Though I have not had a day off in 3 years and it some times feels like work. :-)

I cannot guarantee getting out once in a week which is why I have put off getting a bird. My situation will change when I retire from my current job in just over 3 years time. Until then I have the advantage of being able to help out a mate fly his birds. This also gives me the opportunity to learn as much as I possibly can before I get my own BOP.

Sorry I voted too before seeing the 0900-1700 work restriction. My work schedule was 1600-2400, as such, I got up around 0800, then got ready & went out till about 1400, actually kept track, my average a season was 3.5 hours per day, seven days a week, I flew in sleet, rain, snow, windy days (however hunted in woodlots, anywhere I could find it protected, this wasnt about game, it was all about exp for the raptor and conditioning. Sure many days we wernt out long LOL, but very few days we didnt go out.

I was watching this with interest,

But by the poll results some folk must be pork pieing,

why ?

on a 9-5 job
its dark when you wake up and dark when you finish work in the winter,

so unless your out lamping there is no way you can fly 5 times a week or more.

owls excluded ofcourse.

Totally agree, I work now, 12hr shifts, Mon-Tues-then work 8hrs on Wed, then off till Sat when I work 12hrs and on Sunday, as well. Then off till Tues-Wed, then I work, 12hrs each, then off till monday. Then the schedule repeats, I doubt this is condusive to having a top knotch game hawk or team.

Just a FYI, I know a couple who were avid game hawkers, who took their lunch breaks or did flying, their HH, so it can be done, but I guess depends on the job, boss etc.

I work 8 to 16-00 but some times later. I fly mine almost every day. Not hunting every day most just under the flood light in the garden to get fit. Also I use mine for lamping. It is stupid to suggest that people who work 9 to 5 could not have a BOP! not everyone can have the perfect jobs. But all willing to put the time and effort in can keep them to a good standard. Mine are as fit as most and do well in the seson, with only weather affecting results. Its these daft comments that have ruined this forum and made lots of good people leave!

Some keep birds just to fly at w/ends , which can be frowned upon by members on the forum,
rightly or wrongly, depends on your own view i guess

A bird in my humble opinion that is only flown on the weekends only has virtually no hope in hell of pursueing game in that condition, against prey that exercise 24/7. Its better used for educational purposes, lure flying or pet keeping, but maybe a great breeder too.
