My wee mH has wrecked his tail feathers BIG time , he's doing it when tethered in mews on gravel floor ..it looks grand when dry ......but jesus looks like its fulla holes when he's flying ......what can i do ?????

either imp some replacements in
fit a tail guard
or find whats causing him to bate in his mews

this is my first bird .I only gottem 28th Sept , no feathers to try imping and he seems to be bating cos he hears people.

get him off the gravel!!!! put him on grass, or if you cant, then put and old carpet under his bow. If you know he bates then he should not be on any kind of gravel or hard surface.
if the feathers look taty but are pretty much still complete, then dont worry about it..he will still fly ok. How bad is it?

does he get flown regular & handled? he might be bored in his mews.
i dont know what to suggest apart from what ive already said mate.sorry.

if you want to imp feathers back on try asking at the nearest falconry center if they have any spare. i use to get asked all the time.

he's flown everyday without fail unless its way too windy.or raining too heavily.he's flying ok.it just looks rough when wet especially it lies very close to the stems of the individual feather for about 1 and a half inches or so ......and his landing capabilities are much improved than before so he's less clumsy in hedges !......carpet i will try .in fact i'll try anything .i'm considering shooting a crow and stealing his tail feathers just in case i have to imp.!

your best having a few off cuts of carpet so you change it regularly. Nothing worse than a damp,smelly,pooey carpet directly under your bird
