Graham Stuart
20-12-2005, 08:47 PM
i put bells on her so she used to them just incase she goes into trees when im out with her when older, easier to find, also i can hear her sneak up the stairs to dive bomb me when im in the bath:wink:
Wightwings
21-12-2005, 04:15 PM
fair enough and i know opinions vary but personnaly i am not a beliver in it, it must be painful for them when you think most of their heads are designed to pick up sound......i mean would you find it comfortable wearing an earing aid and someone ringing bells next to you everytime you moved.......;-)
Had quiet a few owls and never once put a bell on one.....nice looking bird tho

Come on Barney, don't let them get at you take with a pinch of salt. At the end of the day Owls are still BOP and I have no problem with people keeping Owls and i am the first to admit that I have in the past kept Owls for breeding all be it the rarer more expensive Owls but Owls all the same.
Simon also says his first bird was an Owl and I am sure that if most Forum members would admit it they have also at one time kepy Owls.
I think the whole Owl **** take issue has now gone too far and we are all guilty of the odd Owl **** take some more than others but they are really only having a Hoot. (blame Harry Fu*kin Potter for that) lol
If you love your Owls there is nothing wrong with that in my books A well kept and loved Owl is better off than a misstreated and neglected Falcon or Hawk any day.
Don't leave the Forum M8 please your one of the nice guys on here but if you find you don't want to stay anymore then best of luck to you for the future and well done you guys who wound him up this much Barney was/is a plessure to have around.
Terry

how old is he and what weight is he...
Hells99
08-01-2006, 07:03 PM
They think he's about 9 yrs and apparently (according to Liz) is 'handleable'. I read that to mean he's an absolute little b***er! She reckons he will quite down with a good bit of manning and socialising, she wants him suitable to be in a static display for fund raising or in schools etc. Don't know his weight - he's not a flying bird so he's kept relatively fat. He's in a freeloft aviary at the mo with a horned eagle owl who also has people problems.
Graham Stuart
08-01-2006, 07:09 PM
you would need to see what he is like when you get him home, he will probably be fat and not very responsive, my barn owl is ussually 10oz and i left a neighbour to feed him for 6 days over christmas when i was away but unfortunetly another neighbour took it upon himself to also feed him (with food i left him previously)resulting in a 15 oz barn owl when i returned, he wouldnt come to me till i slimmed him down a bit he is now 12oz and coming nearly as quickly as before..

Hello Barney
It is nice to see your new Owl Bengie grow from such a young age into a beautiful fully grown bird and I also like your Barn Owl Barney. I think you are doing a good job on them and you obviously love them very much.
I would like to get myself a Falcon one day and fly it, but I seem to attract negative responses on this list

Very unfortunate that you had such a bad introduction to this forum; not all of us are quite so juvenile.

Just thought i would come back on to let anyone know who was interested in Bengy that i have to part with her last week as my little boy now 10 months was suffering bad from what we thought was the cold and a very bad chesty cough for some time untill we found out he has citicosis and the bird was making him really ill, as bengy was too young to go outside in her avery i had no option but to look for a new home for her, i still have barney but he but he isnt allowed in the house no more so he is flown for an hour every morning then put on his block in the garden...Graham

Barney this is really bad news. I feel sorry for you and your family, but I am sure you have made the right choice.
All my life I was told that the birds gave me Asthma, I just ignored them, for many reasons, that I will not explain here, as I do not want to hijack your thread.

Barney, I have looked all over the net for anything about this aFfliction and it only seems to come up in opinions of people like it was an old wives tale. I did do quite a bit of research on birds and any transmittable bacteria, viruses and diseases and there are only a handfull of them that actually affect people. The one you listed doesn't seem to be listed anywhere I could find. I understand that your child is obviously more improtant than the bird, but are you sure this was the problem?

Psittacosis is an infectious form of pneumonia transmitted by psittacine birds (parrots, love birds, poultry, pigeons, canaries). The symptoms are feeling ill with a poor appetite, fever and a cough and breathlessness.
It is caused by Chlamydia infection of the lungs, which although not bacteria, can be destroyed with antibiotic treatment.
didn't know you could get it from an owl though!!- learn something new every day- sorry to hear about this Barney it must be a nightmare
