Hey Folks, Mort, male RT, approx 6-7 months old has started squawking and screaming whenever I enter my garage, his mew and/or handle him. It is driving me nuts. Even when he is cropped up and I am manning him watching a bit of tv he sits there sqawking into my ear, how annoying. Is this a first year thing that he will grow out of or did I screw up some of his training? Any thoughts or ideas?
As for me, I am a first year apprentice with 11 months left to go on my apprenticeship. My sponsor is out of town for a bit longer so I thought I would toss it out here and see if anyone can offer any advice. He (Mort) has always made some noise, but nothing like he has the last 5 days or so. I had also thought that this may be caused by his instinct to migrate and not being able to. Who knows for sure.
Sincerely,
Henry

training and history of the bird, ie how old when you got him, how and where? Other than the imprint thing, it is usualy weight related. Even if cropped up, is the bird basically around flying weight or fat weight and not flying??

That was what I was thinking, but wasn't sure about where Wurkin comes from.

He is chamber raised as in Ontario there is no wild take. I got him on July 29th and started free flying oon Sept 3rd. He was born approx, late spring, exact date is unknown as he was truly chamber raised (no human contact at all). I trained him basically just like any north american falconer. His initial response wait was approx 820 grams and I hunt him around 830 grams. His screaming has just started the last week - 10 days (to this severity at least). My concern was that it was non stop, even after cropping him up and having him up over 1000 grams and he has left his food. At the time of posting this he just finished a fasting day and did very little screaming during his weighing and short manning session for the evening. I have a couple inches of fresh snow on the ground so I am heading out in the morning and will see how he reacts now. With any luck we can nail a snowshoe hare and avoid all the migrating bald eagles !!

Why are you manning him in the house at the age of 6-7 months when he is flying free and hunting?
I believe this to be the problem.

looks like youve done more than enough manning ,and now seeing you hes calling out leave him alone just handle him when taking him hunting this may carlm the screaming down a little,

I am manning him as much as possible so he does not relate me to food. I do not feed him everytime he is manned. This is so he starts to see the routine in flying and hunting before being fed and not that everytime he sees me he gets food. I also find him to be a lot calmer when he is handled a lot compared to when I handle him less.
Today, Nov. 17th was a good day, very little screaming. Nice after a week of his vocalization. I am hoping it is because we now have a nice blanket of snow and it looks like winter has settled in. Now to get out and terrorize some of those snowshoes !!!
Respectfully
Henry
