I've heard that people regularly nebulise their birds using F10 Veterinary Disinfectant to help prevent Aspergillus.
I've looked into this and it is proven to be completely safe and there are I've got papers proving its effectiveness.
I already use F10 for all me cleaning etc but I'm just wondering if any of you nebulise, and whether i should be.

Yes on a Gos when reducing the weight etc along with preventative medecine, very worth while. Best place to find out more is to ask your avian vet tho, the phone call is free. The preventative treatment is cheapest in granules but its a real bore counting tiny, lighter than air granules!!! But easier to get down than the liquid. The nebuliser is as used for people.

Ian Garland sells the nebulizer unit and also F10 - i have used it in the past on a number of birds with asper and have seen a reduction in the levels ( we did blood test every six months)

Just one thing tho, before jumping in with a nebuliser, do ask the vet please. BOPs have very small lungs and a very small amount of liquid entering them can cause big problems. Lung infections etc. So you could do more harm than good if you dont do it all correctly.

As Coedhirion has said use the human form of the machine and check with your Avian Vet.

You can pick the machines up on Ebay from as little as £30. And F10 can be bought on Ebay aswell - always nice to bump the feedback rating with everyday purchases.

My vet suggested it for my bird (Parrakeet) idea being put the covers over the cage and let the fumes meander in. But he has been okay since and so have not had to use this method.

Have used it on other aviary birds as a general tonic as have friends. They pop the nebuliser in the avairy sleeping quarters and leave it running for a while abit like a humidifier.

It is 100% safe for both birds and humans and any creature as fr as I know.

As to whether you should be doing this I would check with your Avian Vet.

Watch out !!! it has to be the correct nebuliser. ????? 2, cant remember the name but only the 2 bit. It has to give off a very fine mist that makes it look as if you have been smoking in there. Don't just buy any one, if it is for a Gos or similar you could do more harm than good. Avian vet will tell you correct make and useage...Please !!!

Hi Coedhirion,

It was from two avian vets that told me any human one will do and this was for birds far more fragile than a huge Gos. One of which was my little Parrakeet which is a fifth of the size.

But I hear what you are saying and if anyone is thinking of nebulising their birds they should and hopefully would contact their Avian vet first anyway like I stressed in my post as always.

As for a special machine not heard that before maybe it differs for BOP but would not of thought so.

Both my vets are Avian specialists and deal with raptors all the time but an interesting point which I will ask when I see him next which should be in the next week as running low on various medications and food stuffs.

It is definitely a special modle that gives off what looks like smoke.
My friend is treating a Harris at the moment with this and sporinox (both usualy used on Gos) in the hope of saving its life. It went 'duck diving' in a river in flood and must have taken in water. The first exrays showed clear lungs, only symptoms were not nailing rabbits and being a bit 'puffed' Blood tests just showed low white blood count. One week of antibiotics and the bird was no better. X ray now shows lungs completely white!! The problem is the endoscope samples will take a week to get a diagnosis on. It also goes to prove that a birds lungs do not react well to taking in water. So get the treatment correct.

If you fold a piece of paper, count out the number of beads you require and then drop them in the fold so they are all touching and then mark either end of the line with a pen you can use this as a gauge instead of counting the beads out every time.

I don't pretend to know much about this subject (nebulising), but what does stand out on the one in the link above and this one, http://www.avequip.co.uk/avicFN.html ,is they have qite a variation in flow rates.

The one in your own link is showing 0.7ml/min and the one on the Avequip website has a 4.0ml/min flow.

I may be reading this wrong, but i think i would be asking some of the large Falcon breeders for their input on this one.

If the bird is sick then speak to your vet as there are better drugs than F10 to use for nebulising if the bird does have Asper

cheers for the info mate:goodman:
i spoke to a vet who advised me to use any one for someone with asthma administered to the bird whilst in the travel box so maybe the flow wont be so important with it in a confined space???

thanks

The important thing is the size of the droplets - for birds need to be 1-4 microns to reach the air sacks and lungs.
