Why would you want to feed live mice?
Most people use a varied diet of day old chicks, mice, rats, rabbit and game birds. These are usually bought in frozen (and therefore dead already) from hawk food suppliers such as Honeybrook Farm.
Of course you could be a mouse breeder (!) and have a never ending supply of the little critters. In which case I would suggest you dispatch them first...the might be difficult to keep on the glove otherwise!! lol

Again this is basic stuff. You will feed on a DAILY basis the amounts necessary to keep your hawk at the weight you want. This weight will vary with the weather/hunting etc
If I told you to feed your hawk 3 DOC per day you would end up with a dead hawk. Each hawk will need to be fed according to its individual requirements.

live mice can carry micemotoxocise very similar to myximatosis in rabbits,it is a killer and can be transmitted to people! this is a much greater threat to mankind than bird flu !so under no uncertain terms feed live mice m8.

First thing i would ask is where do you live because if you live in Britain please do not feed your bird live food. The reason for this is it is against the law and is would be classed as a baggie. At the end of the day falconry in this country has enough Di~K head and bad press that we could do without something else in the press. So anything you feed your bird please make sure it is dead first.

weekly diet is easy...
monday:
weigh the bird and give it the right amount of food to change its weight by the desired amount...making sure htat it does not go too low.
Do this for the rest of time untill you die or bird dies for what ever reason
there are not rules...its not like a pet dog...fill bowl each day..keep water topped up. ITs completely ramdom. each food item has different values and makeing a weekly planner possabley COULD but definately SHOULD NOT be done
not having a go at you...just feeling a little sarcastic...i apologise for this ;-)

im sorry to be blunt but go and find yourself a falconer that is willing to teach you hands on. DO NOT go and get your self a bird! ... it will be the biggest mistake of your life, you will throw the £300 down the pan when you wake up to find the bird dead in your lovely new mews .. you are asking questions you should know instant answers to months before you even consider getting a bird. As kanati says it is not like a pet dog or cat, a birds diet and weight needs constant checking and adjustment of food intake to lift or lower its weight.
I hope your next post is one asking for a local falconer to take you out and show you the ropes hands on, then when that falconer thinks you are ready im sure you will be helped to find the correct bird for you and ur circumstances and you and the bird will follow a successfull path
if you are any where near north yorks then i will be more than happy to take you out on a days hunting. If not post your area and im sure someone on here will do the same.

craig mate thats not blunt...this is blunt...are you a complete idiot....feed it live mice....hunt ridiculous sized quarry...how much food do i give it ....you have to have a license to watch telly ....what is the world coming to....do not under any circumstances get a bird ...ever...look out of your window...see those brown things in the air tweeting ...they are birds...leave em alone.... go buy a tarrantula... preferably really poisonous...i dont mean to be awful but the fact your even considering buying a bird at this time of year when you obviously know nothing about falconry...qualifies you not to have one...craig is very gallant in offering to teach you...but i know craig and with the silly questions youre asking on here you are likely to end up in some shallow grave on his land being badger fodder....if you take this ...and repost...please help id like to get into falconry...i have everything i need but a bird and experience ..i dont want to even think of a bird before next year ..then i will apologise and gaurantee that the majority of people on here will do everything they can to help...and i also guarantee that in two seasons time...you will be a happier person for it....

No need to swear D.S.S...
You can understand people getting a little upset - when you've read one book - built yourself a cage and you are talking about getting a bird - then asking what to feed it and will a MHH take a hare. Etc etc These birds take a lot of time, dedication and you have to have enough respect for the birds to find out as much as you possibly can. You have been advised - nicely and maybe not so nicely - to learn more before you dive in - but you seem to keep repeating the same old (very basic) questions. Listen to what people (with a lot of experience) are telling you. Read more and get some experience - otherwise you may start off with a great bird and either spoil it or worse kill it.
If you don't have time to find out more then look in Petsmart - they have lots of nice birds there.

Haway peeps, give this lad a chance. the majority of birds I get in from rescue are form knackers who get a bird without any knowledge, facility what so ever. I have recently rescued a number of harris's from a lass who had them all in a converted outhouse toilet. 3feet wide and 6 feet deep.
Tleast this lad isn trying to get some info. I know when I was preparing for my first bird I took a while geeting in all the bits and bobs required. I also took ages building my aviary. I still didnt get a bird for another 12 months afterwards. This just sounds like good common sense to me.
Saying that EHS the best advice has already been given to you. You MUST come out of that shy and retiring shell of yours and go seek a local falconer who can show you the correct way in addittion to coming on here. Dont give up on the questions though.

can i give a bit of practical advice to EHS- DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE EVEN CONSIDE GETTING ANY TYPE OF BIRD OF PREY IF YOU CANNOT EVEN WORK OUT WHAT IS A GOOD VARIED DIET-U R NOT EXPERIENCED ENOUGHT TO OWN ANY BIRD OF PREY. read up on the subject loads, balance it out, can u afford it, do u have enough time, where will u get u equipment and food from. as has been said it is illegal to feed live animals to the birds unless caught by the bird its self. Go on a few decent courses or learn from an experienced falconer.
