hi, i am new on this forum and i am nearly what my sceen name says :D, i would like to understand more about all birds of prey, harris hawks in particular as this seems to be what my partner is into most. i mainly want to understand the basics so i can at least understand a bit when my partner starts babbling on about things. even tho he does not have a bird at present but is planning on it within the next year most of his spare time is looking up details and reading the forums here to get more tips on how to care for them.
i am also interested in these special birds but as i do not understand anything about it i cannot appreciate it like my partner does and like the majority of you on here. i actually find the barn owl myself more interestimng but again do not know alot about these either, i would be very appreciated on any information that any one can give me so that i understand more about them,
thank you in advance for your help
kat
p.s my partner sometimes has trouble explaining what he is trying to say,

Thats not like you Mike.....a young woman in distress and I bet she is posh as well :goodman: I can see that lady lovin' the feeling of you red tail Mickey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FW: My girlfriend loves my (our) hawk. But don't stroke it. However you need to talk to it and make sure you eat what it catches for you. They are simple creatures....just like us men.....and love to feel needed. But don't get a Barn Owl as they turn nasty and will kill children and your neighbours cat (seriously). Oh and lots of voles!!!!!

Hi and Welcome Falconry Widow to the Best Forum.
Depending on you and your partners experiences with birds of prey and I'm only guessing that it might be limited.
My advice would be to join a course on BOP management then after the course you should know the type of bird you want, and the cost... don't forget the cost of housing the said bird and all that goes with it.
Good Luck.

Take Albies advice and the both of you go on a course together, make sure you tell the people running the course that you like barn owls. There is a world of difference in flying owls to flying hawks and this way they can taylor the course to your individual needs.
As with all things just because he likes hawks doesnt mean you have to as well, if you prefer owls you go girl. After all men and women like shopping, just men prefer to go to Halfords and we prefer to go to TK Maxx...and Hennes...and Next...and La Senza...and Pilot....and DP...and Jane Norman...and.....;) ;) ;D

I agree thats very good advice. Courses can help u realise what type of bird you like you could go into that course set on a barnowl and come out set on a tawny. Gr8 suggestion Albie

my partner said that hawks could go after owls, but one thing id like to know is if we end up with getting both at some point and bought them both as babies at the same tme, would they growing up together not attack each other if any one knows what i mean
i would also like to know all basics, i will look into courses, if any one knows anywhere that they do them could they please let us know,
the other thing is some one mentioned that owls go after cats, is this true as i have 3!!!!!!!!!!

To answer your question FW,
Even if you had a Hawk and a Owl as babies and raised them I think there would always be a risk that one would try and eat the other.
You can still own and train both like me and mine, but keep them apart from each other.
By that I mean my two birds sit out in the garden together and they sort of tolerate each other, but I'm sure that if they could reach each other one would try to eat the other.. Your ideal set up if you have the room is a mews either side of an 8x6 shed with doors into the mews from insde the shed.

my partner said that hawks could go after owls,
And vice versa, which is why you would keep them at a safe distance if wethering on the lawn together.
but one thing id like to know is if we end up with getting both at some point and bought them both as babies at the same tme, would they growing up together not attack each other if any one knows what i mean
Unless your partner wants a malimprint as his first hawk I would advise against this, owls are a different matter. Birds of prey are not like dogs or cats and you could never trust them with on another however they were brought up.
i would also like to know all basics, i will look into courses, if any one knows anywhere that they do them could they please let us know,

I am not sure where you are in the country so cannot advise on where to go for a course. I am sure if you post your location someone can let you know.
I would be more worried about your cats going after the owl, a cat bite is lethal due to the nasty bacteria they have in their mouths. Again, you would look at keeping them apart as far as you could.
As well as a course you should really get some basic texts, there is another thread on books, and in addition to this Jemima Parry Jones did an entire book on training and flying owls.
