hi m8,
if your dog likes chasing rabbits then you wont be able to use him with a bird, what if the bird got the rabbit and the dog came in to? you may be able to stop him catching them, but i dunno if it will be possible

I disagree guys if this dog is fine with the birds,he can be entered and with some form of obodience training he can be trained to a high level if the bird has the rabbit enforce the fact that it isnt his,the idea of dogs hunting rabbits or chasing them is fine,as long as you enforce the fact that as soon as the bird takes the rabbit its his,not the dogs, its in princible exactly the same as hunting as part of a pack you teach your dog,not to be greedy,ie not to take anothers game, you may get some trouble but as long as your dog is socialised with the bird then fine, and hopefully the bird will teach the dog a few manners,if need be reprimand the dog,be hard if he causes the bird trouble, the gsd isnt exactly a proven hunting type dog but they certainly dont lack inteligence, and can be trained to a high standard, dont be put off you only get what you put in remember that and with plenty of time and effort you'le hopefully get results, good luck all the best with the team you can hopefully build...

Cheers Gary..

Oh dear...

Seen the website...

You are asking a lot of questions - which is good - but back to basics - do you have the time to dedicate to a BOP?

Are you seriously thinking of adding a Bird to your posse of dogs and ferrets - to supply
" all your hunting needs".

My apologies - EHS... I had visions of you, the entire pack and yr future Harris marauding across the Country...

The BFC Newsletter of March 03 has an article entitled "Dare to be Different" about a lass who hunts with a Harris and a GSD... She's tonnes of dog experience though and still had some issues. I also think her dog is a bit unusual/ special.

Ask yourself - why don't people 'generally' hunt with GSD's...?

Regarding the time thing - obviously training and hunting your bird will take up most of your time - but to have a GSD running like clockwork so's it won't compromise your bird will take so much time and effort you may never get both working well...

Personally, unless you're an experienced handler of many years - dog and bird - I'd really advise against mixing the two.

From what i no german shepards can be trained as well as u want and they will not stop chasing anything even if thier master calls and shouts at them to stop. No amount of training can go against instinct

i had the most wonderful german shephard who was trained to a very high degree ...would i have put him under a bird ...not breally as he wasnt trained for that particular job...there is nothing to put a bird off a certain dog quicker than that dog chasing the rabbit or whatever ..as the bird is doing it....a friend came out with his pointer and she chased a bunny when my bird was chasing and the bird would never hunt over an english pointer again...any other dog fine...can it be done of course it can...but get the dog not chasing at all..or you are in for trouble...and i dont mean not running in when she is on it i mean not chasing at all.....

Too true... Trigger/ HP

My experience too... chase instinct is incredibly strong... I suspect too strong to be used under a BOP - after all, they are what they are...

Don't get me wrong - I love my GSD's - but love my Harris just as much - and never the twain shall meet.

in my opinion there is no point in the gsd out in the field. yeah you can have a gsd drop down by comand, i have done it when teaching dogs to attach criminals but you dont want the dog to chase the rabbit thats the birds job. if you want the dog to locate the quarry the best way for the gsd is to either bark or sit both of which are not any good hence the pointing breeds that are out there, and if you want the dog to flush get a small dog that can get through the bush,
GSDs are excellent dogs but not the one i would choose

Well said that is exactly what the pointers are for

EHS, do you just want the dog to tolerate the bird? Or are you planning on using it whilst hunting?
