what do people think is acceptable "dress" when out hawking, should we wear moleskin pants chequerd shirts and a tie? or is army surplus dpm's good enough to promote our sport? good sturdy brogues or wellies? baseball cap or deerstalker? what do people really think?

Blaze

As long as you dont go out dressed like a gypo n try n look a bit respectable i dont think it matters.......What do you wear bb....WHEN YOU GO OUT HUNTING....

BHawk
21-11-2005, 12:44 AM
anything it doesnt truly matter what you wear, what matters is if you can do falconry justice and give a good name to the sport we love, and as in all situations as long as the birds healthy and happy and the quarry is dispatched as quick as possible i cant see any problems

Lanner
21-11-2005, 10:18 AM
I don't think that it really matters, so long as what you;re wearing is reasonably neat and clean(Says she who inevitably ends up in the mud)

I wear jeans, my countryside alliance, liberty and livelihood sweater, a fleece and hiking boots, it's warm and pretty neat and tidy.

As Bhawk said, the most important thing is giving a good impression of yourself and our sport, tweed, moleskin pants any of that, while very nice is just the icing on the cake.

Dress to impress thats my motto.......full regalia for me.......but thats JUST MY PERSONAL standpoint...........:yawinkle: :yawinkle:

Apart from which I only ever wear moleskins and shirts around the estate, so the addition of a tie and some gators ain't a big deal really.......

when I'm out on my own...and in the middle of f*cking nowhere....i wear any old clothes...the only thing to see what I'm wearning is the Dog. the hawk and the things being chased...and none of them seem to mind me looking scruffy.

If I'm out with other people..I will find somthing a bit more tidy...but its not a fashon parade...and wearing mole scins etc...doesnt nesecerily give a good impression...plenty of people would look at you and think...'****!' and think your a toff who just like killing things... wear every day clothes and the every day people you meet will accept you....

Pitbull
21-11-2005, 10:45 AM
clothes that keep you warm and dry is the main thing. If you cant look after yourself what hope have you got in looking after your bird

Addi
21-11-2005, 10:53 AM
must admit i tend to wear a check shirt and moleskins if im off out for a days hawking, if im just poping out for an hour then just sumthing warm that im not too fussed about getting dirty but i always wear my high length waterproof thermal walking boots, makes such a difference to footing as well as stopping me braking an ankle or getting wet cold feet !

BHawk
21-11-2005, 10:55 AM
its just a matter of common sense to wear soemthing warm and protective:rolleyes:

I believe that it depends who you are with. On my own it is warm and dry and does not really matter. With other people warm and dry and reasonably tidy. Visiting people whose land I am hunting on Smart with hawk and bottle of scotch in hand!

Dont think it matters what you wear who are you trying to impress wearing moleskin trousers when out hunting? As long as your warm dry and comfortable carn't see a problem who is going to see you apart from the land owner Yes go smartley dressed to impress to get the permision in the first place but there after go dressed acording to the weather...........

Dave G
21-11-2005, 12:36 PM
as long as its warm and does not rip easy thats fine as being dressed up to the eye balls doesnot make your hawk hunt any better lol

Tim Laycock
21-11-2005, 12:46 PM
The most important point is that as well as having a hawk that is without vice, Is that you dont go out looking like a ****!

Simple as that!!!

when ever i go out working i.e shooting, hedgelaying, copicing and all that jazz, i wear checked shirt and a pair of plain green army surplus trousers.

i cant really see the point in dresiing like tweed fruit member of the royals UNLESS you for some reason or another are working your bird over land that belongs to somebody proper.

What do you mean by somebody proper?

like for example if you are working on an estate with a big owner...a respectable person...if you get what i mean...

The great advantage of good quality moleskins, quite apart from their smart appearance, is they are impervious to brambles. I have torn my way through bramble patches of impenetrable appearance without so much as a scratch, thanks to these. I gave up denims long ago. They're coarse, horribly clammy when wet, no defense against briars whatsoever, and just don't look right. A cotton check shirt, harris tweed jacket, again, proof against brambles and the cold, and a peaked cap, plus a good quality barbour against the rain, and a tie if the occasion dictates, complete the ensemble.
Of course, these days I decline to face thick cover myself. An young, keen assistant is handy in such cases.

MattSpar

Presumably, an estate with a small owner doesn't count.

Presumably, an estate with a small owner doesn't count.

i also said a respectable estate owner. i personnaly would only dress like a royal in tweed if the owner and their estate was respectable.

i cant really seem any point in wearing all the posh stuff if something else can do the job just aswell. This said, i do own some of the high quality clothing and some times work in it but its mainly saved for special occasions

MattSpar
21-11-2005, 02:15 PM
Yes CC, I WAS joking actually, though not regarding clothing. I don't regard tweeds and moleskins to be "dressing like a Royal", merely practical and presentable.

I personally wear moleskins because I have yet to find another type of trouser that stands up to the onslaught of barbed wire! They are warm and comfortable. I also dont wear them for any other reason, so they can get covered in mud, blood etc.

I also normally wear a cheap green moleskin 'puffa' type jacket for warmth (and so I can replace it every year when it gets too ripped to use!) with aigle neoprene lined wellies. I think as long as you are dressed in 'country' colours when asking for permission etc thats fine. I dress for warmth and practicality and I think most farmers would recognise that!! (except the ones who hold their trousers up with string!!)

i agree a sports bra is a usefull bit of kit, for carrying rabbits home, making an emergency shelter, or a hammock if stuck out in the wilds of wanney and in my case a handy jock strap if the elastic should suddenly go on my y fronts. thongs however i find chafe the bum when running, but then ive got a hairy arse?

I have found that fishnet stockings are essential, simply because when they get snagged on brambles, the holes don't show so badly.

For some reasons my wife disagrees

Standards! theres the key word!
"NEHH set low standards and failed to achieve them" heheheh
.
I recon a pair of cleanish jeans with boots or wellies and a half smart wax jacket with a flat cap is both comfortable and warm, it looks the part without going over the top

I have now changed to MINTY (see introductions) from Avalon . It explains it all in there.

Being a lookalike to MINTY (east enders Male Adonis to all women) i find your choice to be the correct dress sense for the field.
I see the sports bra as essential as knocking ones self out would not be fair to the bird although i am sure there would be others to help you in case of medical attention.
A thong is right but maybe has a draw back as Paula Radcliffe when Nature called did not have one so maybe its a special one tailored for the job i am sure she would like to hear from you.
Anyway thank you for your reply.............Would you like a PIE?

MINTY.

I have years of practice regarding calls of nature in the woods, and can even 'go' with a hawk on the fist (none of the pick up piece problems that men can have here!!). The wearing of a thong is the least of my worries!

i think its vital that one gives carefull consideration to ones attire when partaking in the most noblest of sports, labels being of paramount importance of course, its not just ones attire its your equipment as well of course its just not cricket to be seen out with ones harris hawk carrying an old game bag it MUST be a designer bespoke, hand made, quality item bearing the makers emblem for all to see, and your glove is just not a real falconers glove unless it has at least one flying falcon upon it plus their name of course. well these are my standards sadly there are those who arnt of my breeding and quite frankly just look plain common whilst out hawking,
