View Full Version : Talons
Crash

I'm conducting a 'poll' to see if there is sufficient interest to warrant the capital expenditure to mass produce the following items.
How many times have you flown your bird at quarry only to end up with a tuff of fur or feathers for the effort? How many times do you think that the reason for this was due to dull talons? Once you start sharpening talons you are doomed to continue this process for the entire season which in return shortens the talon every time.
I developed for my bird (RT) a set of, what I have registered as, Talon Tips®. These devices fasten to the tip of the rear and front 'largest' talon and are made of a very hard material which has an extremely sharp point. (Two tips per foot) After having installed these tips my bird has drastically improved her slip to catch ratio as very few bunnies slip through her grasp. The tips have stayed sharp since first installed over a month ago but can be removed or sharpened while installed if desired.
From my measurements of various bird sizes and types I've determined that the only real variable is the thicknesses of the talon (at the tip) while the radius or curvature of this portion of the talon is relatively constant so mass production of various diameters is feasible, (small, medium, large for example).
I've also designed an item that I call Talon Sheaths® which are inserted over the talons while the bird is not hunting. These help prevent the bird’s natural talons from becoming dull due to banging around in her mew or transport box. When you get ready to hunt just simply remove the sheath and you're ready to go.
Please take the poll and let me know if you would be interested in these products or am I just nuts for suggesting this. Pricing will be determined at a later date depending on demand.
Thank you for your time.

Lol B_B.
Sounds like these might put the hawk in danger if something goes wrong. We've all heard of the hawk piercing itself with its own talons, but now with this new invention, it could do some more harm...
I know why you designed these m8, and it is an ok idea but there has to be some other way that using strong pointed metal on the birds...

If I were you id look very closely into the law that governs the banning of cock fighting spurs. As you may find if memory serves me correctly that this set up would be illegal.

why stop at a metal pointed tip for the talon...why not do a full metal cover for the talon with a blade running along the inside edge...that way if the bird doesnt get a good grip...the damage caused will be so horific, the bunny wont get far anyway! 8-) you could also put a non leathal poisen on the tips, so any victims that excape sucome to the drugs before they make cover and you can just go and pick them up alive! with this weapon any hawk can take down any prey item as long as its trained just to hit it once. - Fox hunting with sparow hawks... the options are endless !
Sorry...I dont think its actually a bad idea...but I wouldnt want to start doing it...I find the talons on my hawks sharp enough...would like to see a pic though.

A little aside from the sharpening bit but! Me and Addi out lamping the other night were having problems with keeping prey in the beam. How about a head mounted light unit for eagles with a back pack mounted power unit. PLEASE nobody take this idea seriously.

poison tips ...dont be ridiculous ...if you then feed the bird the rabbit would it not poison the poor bird...then youd have to carry an anti venom...and before you knew where you were youd look like a chemist when out hunting.... maybe you could invent spinning razors onto the sides of the birds legs then as well as damaging the rabbit beyond escape it would cut through deep cover as the bird flew along leaving a neatly mowed track for you to follow ...then a nice bloodbath at the end of it... i like the lamp idea though and think you should patent it.... ferugi kruger eat your heart out....
great idea

No No No...I said non lethal poison...it just knockes the bunnie out for a bit while you catch it...its perfectly safe for the hawk to eat!...and Spinning razors! thats just stupid...whos going to try that! If you are going to come up with ideas make them sencible ones HunterPaul!

wot about chain mail leg warmers for our birds?good protection against squiggles as well?
HunterPaul
22-11-2005, 07:05 PM
spinning razors is not a sensible idea...ha...remember the film grease....well like the ones one the car that cut into greased lightnings body work....not too stupid now is it...good enough for travolta..... a non lethal poison ...the only one known in england is my mas cooking.... but that is only non lethal on a full grown man...any less would be dead as a doornail....

I feel chainmail would be too heavy for a bird to carry...maybe some kind of teflon armour would be better?
HunterPaul...the spinning blades on the car were only spinning because they were on wheels...for the bird to achieve this they would have to have some kind of motor and this again would be too much weight to carry...Sorry!
HunterPaul
22-11-2005, 07:20 PM
surely this depends on the fitness of the bird.... and maybe the motir could be attached to specially made wing sleeves ...this would then give them the extra propulsion required to carry the chain mail and razors and possibly a flick knife...with a poison tip if you insist.... and besides your just putting up obsticles

You could always equip the bird with a specially engineered AK47 so as their wings beat, they fire rounds:yawinkle:

the ferrets could do with some thermal goggles to aid in the rabbit detection...its dark down them holes! also a mounted thermal camera showing the falconer on a portable handset whats going on... and also showing the bird on head up display so it can start its stoop just before the rabbit comes flying out of the hole...give him a head start!

ferret wi the HH that way when it flushes it can go straight into a slip

would also be useful if you could somehow cross the ferret with a shark for the electro receptors on the nose...it would detect the bunnies before it could see them...then let the thermal image take over once its in sight

Yes in fact it's like humans fighting with brass knuckles. I must admit that when she clamps down on my glove it smarts a bit.

If I were to pit RTs against one another for sport then maybe you would have a point.

A very good point, no pun intended, as when she clamps down, it can pierce thin leather. I use a rather heavy leather glove which is almost impervious to them but not completely.

No the point i meant too make was the wording of the law. I think youll find that it is ilegal to actually fit anything to an animal for one animal to directly injure another.

Hello K,
Maybe there’s a law against using such things in the UK but I called the local conservation department and they are not aware of any rulings that would prevent the usage of these tips on raptors. Hunting at night, using lamps or not, is illegal in this state. Rules apparently vary from one country to another.
Thanks for your input.
