this has probably allready been covered but what do you use on the floor of your birds weathering?i use pea gravel and find that birds that bate a lot do wear down their talons more than they should, ive seen sand used but this seems to actually discolour the bird, ?

I wouldnt use sand. I've noticed in the past that in the frosty days that it can become frozen. I use pea gravel but make sure that they are dry before putting in the mews/aviary as if they aint then the birds feather can become discoloured (nothing a good bath wouldnt sort out but still). I dont really let my own birds stay in their mews so they can bate whenever they do, they are out every day so they are on grass for most of the day...

I to B_B have noticed that pea gravel can "blunten" their talons, so i have a rock in my mews and aviaries, which my birds use all the time. Both to clean etc. their beak and keep their own talons sharp(ish) :D

All the best

I was always told to avoid sand .. if it gets under the jesse it acts like sand paper on their legs ! ( it does this under the horses bandages so it makes sense to me) Pea shingle for me.

i gebnerally use pea gravel but i will use sand for falcons. I won't feed my falcons on the sand though. I hear iut can cause problems with their crop

i always use playpit sand...very easy to maintain... and i never have any problems as the bird does very little bating on it as it spends most of every day on the grass outside....

I heard that too. Thirteen years later of feeding on silver sand with falcons, hawks, eagles, and the od owl, not one problem ever

I used building sand the smooth stuff
put the birds meat on a piece of laminat flooring
she would always eat on it for didn't like the sand on her food
easy to wipe clean for the next time
