My first non native so I need to keep her toes warm. What is the best thermostatically controlled heater for the mews that you have found to work? (Basic mews that can be shut at night is 8'x8')

Any advice gratefully received

If your mews can be shut at night, dont bother. It will save you the expense and any risks involved.

What bird do you have?

Thanks for that. I appreciate the advice.
The mews is an adapted garden shed (but I have not added any insulation to the walls) - I wasn't really clear if it was actual frost that was the problem or just low temps.
Madam is a Harris.

As long as your bird has somewhere dry, out of the wind and can perch above the frost zone there is little need for any form of heating.

Thank you very much for your time on this. But may I ask one last question ? I know this is going to seem a really stupid question but .... what exactly do you mean by the frost zone ? Madam, while being manned, is tethered to a bow perch sitting on the pea shingle base of the shed. (I was planning to put in a screen perch or similar later.)

Thanks again

I personally would not use a screen perch for a harris, no real need. The bow perch should be fine or if desired free-loft once fully trained, entered and relaxed.

Good .. not being great a DIY getting a level perch accross the mews always challenged me.
I see you are in Perthshire so I guess you might get the odd chilly night !!... if Madam is on a bow perch on the floor of the mews (I can shut at night) could frost still be a problem ?
Thanks

if your mews is designed and laid out properly and the flooring is okay then it shouldnt be a problem. If you can also fully shut it then you should have no worries.

On especially frosty nights I will sometimes use a night box for the harris just to be on the safe side, but only when its below - 5C!!
