What a funny thread??

Yes i would like to know more about your Eagle and Jerkin K? what do you fly them at and where in west yorkshire? what are you catching and in what style of flights? who bred them and what training stages have you taken them thru?

And the last but certainly not the least question? how do you find the time to get slips for both on a daily basis and still go out lamping?

What is a Jerkin and Goldie like on the lamp?

Back to your thread about the falconers fair, im doing the display next year, and i would love for you to bring your Jerkin or Goldie into the display and give us the benefit of your experience flying them in front of a crowd?

Any Chance K? PM me and let me know cheers.

my first falcon I once just flew when completely full just let him fly for some minutes then called him back to the fist. He came back immediately but did not even take a bit of the DOC i had in the glove. And the nicest part of it is that I knew that he was not hungry at all but I just wanted to go out with him and just trusted him to not fly away.

Oh no..that is not a lie..and I still miss that one once and a while.

"Birds dont need water, get enough from the chick yolk"

"The birds arnt fighting, they're playing tag"

"feather perfect"

"Falconry is easy - buy a bird and let it fly at a bunny - no problem!"

" I want a bird of prey, but i wont handle the bird, clean the poo's or cut the meat, poor little chickies"

"He/she was fine yesterday"

These arnt directed at anyone!!!! Just incase anyone wants to have a go at me for being incorrect lol.

my hawk always flies to 1,000 ' when waiting on...... yes thats a 1,000 ' honest:roll:

Years ago I had a new chamber raised eyeas, so did another falconer I know. For some reason he'd fallen into the pitch thing early in his career. He fell hard too. So he called me one day, "Hey, how high is your bird going?" I innocently told him about 100'. "Yea, mine's going 200 feet" A few days later he calls and asked the same question. My bird had done very well the day before so I told him "She hit about 200 feet" his answer was "Yea, mine's going 300 feet" This goes on and on until one day I figured I better try to 'one up' him the next time he called. Same question but this time I jacked the height from the truth into the ozone. He countered with a higher figure suggesting his falcon might have passed the Space Shuttle. Oh well it goes to show the first liar doesn't stand a chance.

Several years before, I knew two falconers with male gosses. Neither one of them would talk to the other though they didn't live far apart. One would call with a report on his bird's kills then I'd mention his nemisis's kills were one or two birds higher than his. A few days later the other called. I did my part and told him his enemy had so and so kills adding a few head for the fun of it. Well to make a long story short both at the end of the season said they ended it with numbers with first year birds at wild pheasants unheard of in these parts. One of them did bring his bird up here. His bird got beat so many times it would sit in a tree and watch bird after bird flush without twiddling a feather. One time his bird was chasing a pheasant. The only patch of cover wasnt' too far away. That pheasant intended to use it to the upmost and hit the cover with the gos right on his tail. The falconer shouted, "He almost got it!!" Well I didn't see any horse shoes or hand grenades laying around so I figure it didn't count.

So I'd say pitch and number of kills rank very high on my list of "Most Told Falconry Lies"

Plains grouse are good for lies too. A falconer calls here and tells me he and 2 of his buddies went grouse hawking. "Each of us took one" he drones on. So I congrat him and change the subject. A year or two later one of his partners and I were speaking. I somehow remembered their trip so did the natural thing and congratualed him on his grouse. "What grouse? All we caught was a duck with about a 1/2 ounce of steel shot in it." Gotta love falconers.

This one is from our last meeting November 2005!
I was leading one goshawk group and I told them that we were going in the line and dogs were searching the field in front of us. So, how the dogs came on points falconers went to their turn and sliped goses. There were 5 falconers including me. One of them, extremly "I know everything" falconer, full of "clever advices" always skiped his turn. Well, who cares, more slips for others. And while we were walking trough the field, he went in one small wood. For a few mins, lots of pheasants went from this wood towards us. Nobody had a slip cos we were all expecting to see his gos chasing one, but we didn't. He didn't join us till the end of the day. Again, who cares, more slips for us :D
For a few hours we went to our cars, and he were there. He told us that he had lots of slips on pheasants and partridges, but gos was unsucsessful. Nobody said nothing. Than he told that he must give a few more flights to his gos cos he didn't give him lots of food. I said it's ok we have our birds on our fists, so give him some flying. Than he took out high block perch, put gos on the creance and he started to call him to the fist. Gos took few flights, but after few minutes of waiting. While he was doing that, he was telling us again how good slips his gos had
"I believe him very much, and others too!" He is prepairing himself for flying gyr this year, cos gos is not so good as gyr is :D
Can't wait to see that!
Cheers Viktor

Falconers are the same world wide from what I can tell.

The funniest I heard was from a falconer here picking up an eyeas. We both agreed we hate to hear someone come up after flying a bird and say, "May I make a suggestion?" His canned answer is perfect. "No! I've seen your birds fly!"

All we caught was a duck with about a 1/2 ounce of steel shot in it." Gotta love falconers.:yawinkle:  :goodman:

Is this supposed to be a lie?

I know of a Harris whose ace at it! Including being half way up a mountain slipping on a rabbiting missing it and deciding thats enough and flying a couple of miles down hill to the owners van.

Moral of the story, dont feed up back at the motor...

I've had 2 birds in my lifetime that would actually try to find their way back to my vehicle. One was a hybrid tiercel the other a peregrine. I don't know why they did it nor how they figured it out. In the case of the peregrine she was always fed on the ground in front of the Toyota I had at the time. Once she flew off out of sight and, as I was getting ready to go find her, I saw the falcon packing a small kill back towards the Toyota. She landed in her usual spot and began to eat it. Surprised the Hell out of me and to this day had I not seen it I wouldn't have believed it.

The best lie I actually believed for a while. A falconer says he caught a sharptail when we arrived. So, we believed him but did notice some road gravel imbedded in the carcass. Someone happened to mention that to a friend of his. The answer was, "Don't you know he's famous for picking up roadkill and telling everyone he caught it."

still can't fathom it out but HTH.... embarrased to say I had a crush on her when I was about 10 ( being a snotty public school boy~ lol going to a single sex school and having testoserone flowing through the system even at that tender age I was game for anything that was obviously of the fairer sex:rolleyes: ) however this very quickly disapeared during my early teens and has never returned, . IMHO Fine person, great showperson, done a lot of good for the sport( refuse to discuss the negatives because you will NOT get that out of me) but my interpretation of a falconer? all in all good for BOP keepers etc :partyman: no offence meant here JPJ if you see this!
