i have a very good freind who lives locally, he has bred some excellent peregrines over the last few years and allso flys them to a very high standard, but he is really a closet harris hawk fan and i know he would love to fly one but is a bit shy about coming out the closet and asking for our advice, can anyone out there persuade FALCONS7 that he should give it a go?

Now this is a situation you don't come across very often at all. I am sure he will do fine without much help at all. Oh and he will need a taste for rabbit :supz: :supz: :supz:

For the first time in 10 years I'm not flying both a peregrine and a HH. In Texas the combination works well because duck season is so short. Once duck season is over in early Feb. you can switch to rabbit and squirrel hawkin' for the rest of the Winter and Spring. You double your fun by flying both. Some fond memories were of days when I would hawk in the afternoon and then get a duck flight with my peregrine at dusk.

This is a joke post right? Why would anyone need persuading to "come out" and admit to wanting a harris'? If it's heaps of exciting sport he wants, there really is nothing better.

I would rather sit in a coal house with the wifes tight high heels on in the dark for a week with a mad dog bitting my arse than have a harris **** in my mews.
I would rather watch Sunderland play at home!!!

OH MY GOD, I have been out with harrises more than I would like to confess, once I was in Scotland with a group of the things on a rabbit infested piece of ground. I found a quiet spot and went to sleep ,thats the exitment I get from rabbit bashing with a hawk,oh and I sore one drop from a tree and kill a pheasant on the ground, exiting or what.
On the other hand I have seen female peregrines from well over 1000 ft splatter , ducks, pheasant ,grouse and partridge and have also flown Ptarmagan .Rabbits and harris hawks ,time for bed I'm getting sleepy. Thanks B.B. for the offer but not until I go to hell and thats what I would call PERGATORY

I too have flown peregrines, and others at game and rooks, also gosses and spars, and others besides, for many years. This has in no way lessened my appreciation of all that the harris' can offer. On the contrary, it has increased it.

So what can or what does a harris do that even comes close to the show a peregrine can put on.The bloody things are that good they need to hunt in a gang to get the job right. The only thing I can say is that they are bright but then so are gyrs.
There is nothing that a harris does that can't be done better by a gos and there not hard to train eather infact finnish males are a piece of p$*s.Harrises are that easy kids train them which is a good thing but like I said moving from a harris to a falcon is a reality check and a kick in the nuts for the falconry pretenders who are lulled into thinking its easy coz they have flown a HH and cought a water hen and a couple of rabbits.I HATE HARRISES and Keith thanks for the indergestion this subject brings. How much a thousand for day old harrises?

...I HATE HARRISES ......
Falcons7's view is just fine. No-one is asking him to agree with my view on the harris', least of all me. I too fly merlins, peregrines, and so on, but I simply regard the harris' very highly indeed. If we all agreed on everything, there would be little point in this forum.

I don’t know how any true falconer can express that watching a Harris hawk hunt is boring. How can watching a Harris hawk hunt up a quarry in cover from the tree's above then stop to mark it, stoop from a tree miss it's prey then fly to another advantage point wait patiently for the dog to flush out the quarry then skillfully fly and capture it be boring?
I do not know how anybody could think that creeping stealth-fully up to the edge of a cliff with your Harris hawk on your fist; then casting your hawk off the top at a group of Rabbits that are some 600 ft below; then watch your hawk target an individual Rabbit, fold its wings and stoop at its target then hit it with such force that it airlifts it of the ground be boring?.
How can watching a rabbit that’s bolted from its warren zigzagging through tree’s with a harris hawk maneuvering itself with precision and skill just behind it be boring?
It’s hard to believe that a falconer finds it boring watching a Harris hawk perch at the top of a large tree anticipating the inevitable flush of a cock pheasant by the dog and when the pheasant appears the determined take off and committed flight of a Harris hawk intercepting the pheasant at 30ft. See an explosion of feathers, the two birds fall to the floor and watch the struggle of a pheasant that’s been bound by the head and chest with the talons of a Harris hawk. How can it be boring?
Simple it’s not well to me it is not anyway. Its obvious you don’t see Harris hawks fly in this manner. While I don’t have a tendency to judge people and I do believe everyone has a right to express their own opinion I'm make an exception here. Judging from your comments you must of had some boring land and some boring Harris hawks or you simply lost your excitement and became boring yourself. I like seeing all birds of prey hunting, it excites me and makes me feel good you’ve lost some of your love for falconry my advice is get it back and don’t be boring.

I would like to say here, in case this thread becomes acrimonious, Falcons7 is perfectly entitled to his point of view concerning the harris'. I personally feel much the same way about several things. It's a free world.

I take it your a HH fan then BJJ don't know how you find the time with all that Nursing during the day lol (sorry Teach)
Every one to their own. I have flown HH, Gos, Eagles, Peregrines, Gyrs, Hybrids and more over the years and my personal opinion is that you fly whatever is best at the quarry you have available to you and the land you have available as well.
I've had some great times with Hawks and even better times with my Falcons but I woulod never dismiss a HH they are good at what they do in the right hands of course. A good Falconer can make an average bird look good a poor Falconer can f**k up a good bird, If Falcons7 is who I think he is then you should go see his Peregrines fly and look at the quality of his birds now that would be educational.

Those that fly longwings in Texas get a lot of the " longwing elitism" harping from the dirt hawkers. It's one of the down sides to being in a club. Fly what you want to, as long as you have the right type of game for your raptor.

Your right Terry I am an harris hawk man and thats the way I want to stay mate for now. Your right about the good bad falconer bit as well without a doubt. I love seeing birds of Prey hunt and I've seen a few different species of hawk and falcon as well and like I said and I wouldn't crab any of them I dont think it's my place too.
Yes it would be an education to see Falcon7s birds fly after all I'm an accademic and i would definatly like his birds but after his comments about the Harris I'm not sure I'd like the man. If thats blunt falcon7 well take it or leave it thats the way I am
PS Get paid if sick and get loads of hols nursing ooops I mean teaching Terry
