HI ya folks just a quick question for you all to ponder on given this situation what would you do ?
Been out flyin with romeo with cast of MHH today had a few flights at bolted rabbits but to no avail then on way back came across pools that was frozen over with islands in the middle of them but before we could call birds back mine had hit a mallard in the middle of the pool and the force of it had took them through the ice and my bird was still holding the duck refusing to let go even though the duck was trying to dive under to make him let go any hows he managed to drag the duck to the island (before you start i had tryed to entise him towards us)so anyways the situation was a MHH on the island with cock mallard soaking wet still trying to kill it shivering with cold but refusing to let go of mallard (and no remarks about quick dispatch)
what would you do ?

So stephen whats yer tel number for future reference lol
can vouch for the water being below feezing when theres ice on the surface and having ice floating around yer neck whilst trying to wade through the silt and debris on the bottom is no good for man or beast and besides i had just me boxers on as had thought about having clean dry clothes to put on when i got out besides i wasn't letting a hard worked after duck get away now was i
And yea romeo i can still here you saying you mad b*****d you lost the plot whilst laughing at me but like i said i would have done it for your's or any others bird rather than leave it there besides he's in the conservatorie now on portable bow drying out eating the head and neck off his reward lol

Not trying to be a smart ass but i know someone who had to do that in freezing water and it didn't sound too good hehe altho the **** taking from the bank was a right giggle i'm told - so i've now bought a pair of lightweight stocking foot chest waders that are small enough to put in a hawking vest/bag pocket and have with you when ur out just in case something like that happens.
no worries

don't forget your arm-bands steve!
when i lost rolf a few weeks ago, i got a phonecall that he was at the other side of the river above the town, so instead of walking down the down and crossing, i just waded throug hthe river, was only about 4 or 5 feet high, but well worth it!

this is exactly the reason why i allways carry a pair of ice skates in my hawking vest this time of year? i would have simply slipped them on and gracefully glided across the ice, retreaved my bird returning smoothly and dryly(perhaps performing a piroet or two on the way) if you cant skate then take some lessons its a vital part of every falconers training, i beleive its part of the LANTRA qualification actually?

You just have to grin and bear it and go straight in and asist the hawk but like hunter paul sais first take all your clothes off even the undies i reakon as you soon warm up once you have dry clothes on i once had to swim 60yards out in the sea in february to get to my gos when she took a hen bird out of the air over a reed covered sea wall i hadnt checked the tide and got a shock when i saw her trying to row in against the wind i thought at one point i may die as swimming with one arm whilst freezing is not easy.

Hi All, Now back from the UAE and freezing my butt off.
All this talk of wading in to retrieve a bird on a kill reminds me of a visit I had from members of the Irish Raptor Breeders Association in 1994, the then secretary Gerrard O'Neil was flying one of my Harris Hawks out on some marshland. He had several good flights on Rabbits then the HH decided to go for a Moorehen this ended up on an island way out in a swamp we told him that as he released the bird it was his duty to retrieve it so he stripped down to his underware and waded in with just a glove gripped in his teeth, there were 5 or 6 of us there and not one of us had a camera with us. The following day we were flying the same area and the bird did a repeat performance ending up on the same island haveing dragged a duck out of the water. Gerrard did not wait to be told it was his responsibility again and just stripped off and waded in. This time I did have a camera with me and got some brilliant pic's of him wadeing back with the HH on his fist with the duck wearing nothing but a pair of green underpants with a shamrock embroidered on them. For you members old enough to remember this pic was published in Cage and Aviary Birds with the caption "Irish Water Sports" I forgot to mention that this happened in Mid February and was freezing cold.
Another little incident was about 3 or 4 years ago I held a BHA field meet here on the Island one of our members, Shean Kemsley had a good Harris that took on Hares with a vengence he released his bird not realising that the Hare was on the other side of a big dyke he ran over to where his bird was and stopped at the Dyke he imediatley turned around and took a flying jump at the Dyke no way was he ever going to make it as it was at least 12 feet wide, in he went with all his gear on and retrieved his bird then he swam back to us, we were all in stiches by this time as about 25 yards away there was a bridge for tractors to cross but none of us had the heart to tell him untill he was back. Shean was so excited that he hadn't even looked and spent the next 3 Hours freezing his butt off after all it was January.
Moral of the the story is "Who needs friends when you got us"
