I pride myself on being able to train a nice quiet bird...I allow no routine from the moment I get it home....I get it up and hunting asap...and im very dilligent about weight control.... the bird I have trained this year is not one im keeping, it is to be returned to the centre where it came from at the end of the season, to be flown next year with various clients going out on hunting days.... up to press she has been catching very well, and will break into cover and give long slips...ive made it so plenty of people have flown her under my supervision, and so she s not fussy whose fist she sits on...she is bomb proof around just about everything... so whats my prob?...about a week ago my mate asked me to look after his bird as he was away for the week... the bird he brought is a mhh also silent...but mature...the two birds have flown as a cast in the past with no problems at all....from the day the male was put on the lawn in my garden this f***ng fhh of mine has not shut her squaking.... the other bird has been gone almost a week now, and she is still at it...now im not asking for advice as i will deal with the problem(loading rifle as we speak)... but it just goes to show that the slightest thing can get these birds at it and it is a problem that once started is a ****** to stop...
will i be sending it back to the centre ...no... because i need to deal with this problem to educate myself as ive never had a screamer before.... will i be argueing with the neigjhbours... yes...but then their kids better be f***ng silent during the summer when theyre out in the garden all day...

I had the same sort of problem with my mhh. I brought the harlems hawk home from the centre i work at and my harris went crazy wouldnt stop whistleing and jumping trying to get him and shouting and screaming the whole time. But the harlems was only there for a day so it didnt take trigs a long time to settle down (thank god).
He seemed to settle after i took him around the house and gardens and showed him that Genral (the harlems) wasnt there any more and he seemed to calm down a bit. Sorry i cant really help and more than that m8

i am training two harris now (one F one M) and the male is silent. the female was silent, but then she met a mature male we have here and hes far from silent, and she started chatting to him, and now they talk to each other all the time, and she is starting to call out in the travel box, etc..when he is nowhere to be seen or heard!. HunterPaul I dont have a rifle...can I borrow yours? Once women start talking theres very little you can do to shut them up
would be interesting to hear if anyone has had the oposite problem - i.e. male harris becomming vocal after meeting a lady harris???

It must be love! :D
My female harris is just calling randomly. she doesnt seem to be calling for me. If i can shut the mature male up, she shuts up a lot, just the ocational call, but she gets bored of it when there is no reply. I find it odd that the male who has had the same training and 'noise polution' as she has, has stayed silent ???
some people might cheer you up a bit by telling you that when their voice breaks they are quieter and the sound theymake is not so bad!!!...Thats ****! - it still gets on your tits and they call just as much!...Just so you know :!: ;-)

if you're not going to give her back while shes a screamer...you might be keeping her for a long time:!: Theres no telling when she will decide to be quiet...if she ever does:!:
I have often wondered if the vet could remove the voice some how ?

Hi Paul,
Ive got the same problem mate. I've had my F harris 6 years now she was brought up with a M Harris which I had for two years. In that time they were completly silent. Then the m harris got killed whilst I was hunting for Phesants with him. Few weeks after this event the female started squawking whenever she saw (only at home and not in the field). Four years later she is still vocal at home but not as bad, this behaviour has been a bit of a puzzle to me too. One thing I have noticed is that when her weight is high she is quite. Can hear her squawking now as I type she must know I'm talking about her
Sorry not much help mate but you aint alone
Cheers
Big Joe

Had a FHH once that was silent at first then started after the first few weeks after entering her on quarry but put up with her for her first season as she was demon on quarry after being told that she may shut up after the first season what a load of b*****ks she got worse after her moult so sold her on to another chap and she was totally silent and has been since so what im saying is first try her at another location for a week and if that fails ill come and shoot her as i know what yer going through not nice

is it screaming or is it just wanting to chat or defend it's own terratory?? the wild buzzards around here encourage Hawks to be vocal, you can tell as when they start the Harris answers. They stop so dos it. Dogs start to yap and the bird will start, but it is not bad or consistant enough to be a propper screamer...they don't stop. If the bird returns to the centre it will probably stop. Often a change of home or environment breaks the cycle...unless you have realy produced a propper screamer, then you will need ear defenders...good luck

Hi HP, i had the exact problem with my juv female mate. ive never had a screamer until now. she was entered early, and was doing all the right things, she was into 30+ rabbits before she started to scream. it only happened after she was pegged out with a mature female harris who is a squacker. really really annoying. i am resigned to having a noisy bird now. she doesnt scream when pagged out, only in her mews. problem is i am at work so cannot peg her out all the time. i take her to work several times a week to cut it down and not **** off the neighbours but it goes right through me.
i blame the adult harris for getting her started. having read all the other posts i feel i am in not too bad a position as she does shut up when i appear, not start. she is quiet, in the field, in the garden, in the house, at work, when fed, at night everywhere but in her mews during the day.
she is taken out and pegged out and allowed to calm down and shut up before being fed or exersized. my male is quiet all day long but squaks as it gets dark, then goes quiet again. weird. i have been told that a change of scenery will shut them up and have seen this with other harrises. a few guys i know bought harrises from a centre where they were noisy. when they got them home they didnt make a noise at all. i guess when you return her to the centre for the moult she will be quiet through this period and could well stay this way when her weight is reduced. other solutions are earplugs. someone once told me putting the radio on works as the harris can hear voices and shuts up. i think this could only work the other way round and get them starting, i never tried it, maybe i should.

My MHH was the perfect neighbour before his first moult. But since then he squawks if he even gets a hint that I am in the area. He is OK as soon as I close him for the night and when he is out flying. I am lucky with the neighbours I have and I hope their patience continues

He screams but not all the time, its totally random also. He will be quite one day and scream the next. In his box , in the weathering, out in the field. I found the best way to deal with him is to do as hunter p says and don't get into any routine, and he rarely gets fed on the fist and will return to the fist for no reward. I just feed him up on the swing/rabbit lure or dragged carcass. I think he will grow out of it in time, just trying to not let it get any worse.
