found this picture of a "Haggard Harlan's Hawk" on the web while doing a google image search for another thread. : www.diversityinutah.com/species/H_harlans.JPG

(can't post it because of copyright but take a look)

Looks more like a juvenile bald eagle to me? (first or second year) Emailed the guy and got a very tart reply about my minute knowledge of any bird of prey and falconry - even though we have both bald eagles and harlans at our center. It is illegal to used bald's in the states, no? I wonder if he knows its not illegal in Canada and if they're his pictures or not. What do you think, Harlans or Bald eagle?

In the US we have a lot of Harlans see them very often. My first RT was a Harlan and was possessed with the Devil. Most Harlans are small around 21-30 ozs. I don't know if that's an eagle or not but it is some kind of bird indeed

Yeah, I knew it was an eagle. We have a beautiful female harlans (as well as an older male) at our center we're hoping to breed in the spring. And yeah, osiris, the beak is definately a bald eagle! Guy needs a good lesson on how to talk to helpful people trying to set him right :P

Hi Fawkes,

I too recognised the beak as that of a immature Bald Eagle. The size of the raptor is also a little big for a Harlan's Red Tailed Hawk. The feet are too big for Harlan's Red Tail also.

Harlans i have, all i can say is a beauty of a bird and has no "devil" tendancies!!! haha!

The weights you gave are that in the region of a male harlan's hawk m8.

Brilliant birds!

Do they have the bright yellow eyes? If you go to my gallery you'll see the creature in person..

The Harlans are traditionally smaller than the western and eastern subspecies of RT's. They are native to the pacific northwest, Alaska and Yukon areas. I trapped one several years ago and it was a VERY docile bird....too docile if you ask me.

Harlan's-Buteo jamaicensis harlani.
a better temperment, but just as good at hunting as the other species of redtail.
this is the male of my breeding pair.

Gr8 Looking bird m8. Harlan's are just amazing!

I was going to get the harlans i am looking after to hunt this year however he has had in the past feather problems, and after his moult this year his feathers were a bit brittle, so the vet agreed with me to put him back into moult. Hopefully his feathers will be ok for next year. Giving him even more supplements like Raptor Essentials (like i always do but giving a bit more), and some extra 'calcium' supplements to help his moult.
