Anyone had a similar problem or have any ideas?? 3 year old female harris, plucking feathers on her chest, only seems to do it when she comes back from hunting. Been treated for mites so I know thats not the problem.
If she carries on Im plucking out the rest and having her for Xmas dinner. (Only joking)

Loads of them do it, nothing to worry about.

It depends on what mite treatment used to rule out mites, all are not the equal. best to use more than one to be sure.

Johnson's doesn't treat red mite. My fhh got them and I used mitex. It has diatoms in it which splinter the miteX and dry them out and kill them. MiteX is used for poutlry also and works really well.

Where can I get Mite-X in the states. I have a hybrid falcon that mutilates his primaries. I've tried several treatments and He is still doing it. It is on an old thread and is a puzzling thing. He is 3/4 peregrine and 14 lanner. (We think).

Its like johnson's baby powder, light and dusty, but unharmful to hawk and human only to red mite. You just have to 'throw' it round the avairy and I tried to dust my birds feathers with it. Did my bird no harm only good!! The company where my poultry farm sources it from is
AFS Animal Care, Unit 4, Stephenson Way Industrial Estate, Thetford, Norfolk, uk, IP24 3RH

There are other remedies ...I have been in contact with I guy in Germany who sells Red might avian and Lysafeed. This product is diluted (rain water) and then injected into its food. It has been tested in Germany and has worked well. What I gather it taints the taste of the blood, therefore, making it unattractive to the mite.
Hope you get your mite infestation sorted. I know what kind of damage they can do to poultry and birds of prey!!! Leemo
