Hello, again everyone thought id share last weeks hawking with seeker, which is the first week of her rehabilitation. Seeker is my 6 yr old F Harris hawk she hunts really well at 2.2. Seeker broke a digit 9 weeks ago whilst out hunting for Rabs; The injury was a clean break on the front major talon on the left leg. 3 wks ago, the vet gave her the all clear. I was told by the vet to leave her another week before hunting her. Which was not going to happen anyway cause her weight was so high. Eventually I dropped her weight to
2.2, which was a week last Sat. Got her out and within 15 mins, she was marking a rab in bramble from the tree above. Did not have Charlie (my Springer) so I went in, took three steps in and out ran bugsy wham did not get 15 yards when she nailed it on the napper. Got seeker off and she was fine no problems with the toe.
Took Seeker out the following day with Charlie which was Sunday she nailed two more rabs. One was a very steep stoop off the fist at the top of a hill at a rab that moved then decided to freeze, big mistake. She left my fist and just folded she got so much speed up in the stoop it was frightening when she whacked the rab, I thought something must be broke? However, she was fine and again her digit held out. The other rab was flushed from bramble Seeker took it on the run flying from a tree above. Left her in on the Monday and flew my young male Harris with my mates f Harris, did some ferreting on some permission I've got, my mates hawk nailed six more rabs but my young hawk didn't take one, he did well but still needs more work.
Took Seeker out again Tuesday again with my Springer and she took another 3 rabs she did really well to hold onto 1 of them which she nabbed in deep bramble on the back-end took me ages to get to her. Her toe held out no prob.
Flew Seeker Wednesday on a small bit of land with Charlie flushing, no rabs were caught but a couple of decent l flights.
Fri took Seeker and Charlie on some good rabbit land full of cover with some nice spaces to run across nearly had a rab soon as I cast her off into a tree but it managed to get into an hole. Walked around the land took one Rab but had many enjoyable flights. Got back to where I we started and Seeker was settled on a telegraph pole I whistled Charlie to heal on his way back to me Seeker took off I scanned the land in the direction she was flying and seen a Rab some two hundred yards away running to sanctuary. Seeker unbelievably managed to catch the rab before it made it home and she hit it that hard the two of them tumbled over a couple of times. When I got to them, Seekers previously injured talon was firmly attached to the Rabs head. No problems again with injury
Sunday Tried a new bit land and had five rabs in less than an hour. Only had three large fields but it was chocker with Rabs had to come off after seeker grabbed her forth which pulled her into a brook with just her wings and head bobbing up and down while the rab was trying to run under water. On the way, back T my young male killed a Rab trying to escape from the middle of the field. After unsuccessfully committing himself earlier on, he redeemed himself good style with a good committed take.
Seekers toe is a little deformed and still enlarged but she uses it as if nothing ever happened.
The Vets at Tarporley (Stanford’s) seem to have done a fantastic job.
Will keep you posted on her progress
