Midge give your bird some credit its doing fantastic if its only 28 weeks and killed the quarry you say, its a baby and you want it to be a adult,
it takes time and the bird will be more bothered about looking around that hunting it would have its mother in the wild and be hunting in a pack. You can drop its weight a little more and make it keener but why. Give it easier slips and enjoy.Rome wasn't built in a day.
One kill every other day is enough for a young bird brings on the confidence no end. This isnt the advice you wanted but is the best you will get if you want a good hunting bird next season.

My male harris' has had the same problem but im sure that it had took a shock to its confiendence, and after 2 weeks of not catching anything and pulling off anything that looks moderatly difficult, but on sunday an easy rabbit popped out and he nailed it, i took him off and that fixed him the next rabbit he saw was in thick cover but he put in 4 atempts at.

Has ur male had any thing like that that could have put his confidence a bit down?

Give it time mate my male is two weeks older and he lacks commitment at times to, but I do believe he will turn out to be a good killing hawk once he gains more confidence and experience. The sister to him is more commited on quarry and seems more confident than him and has killed more quarry than him. However, I believe he will come round and do the business in time, the same as yours will. Good hawking mate

Cheers Joe

Midge its a shame you not over in England i could have took you out for easy quarry.
Honest you bird is doing excellent and to rush would make a mess of the good work you have done.
Good luck mate and dont worry second season you will have a different bird, the babyness will go and the true hawk comes through.

If hes not took gulls b4 it could be just that he doesnt no wat to do with them, he chases them because u hav taught him to and its instinct my male does that with hares but as he gets close he doesnt no wat to do with them, and the size ovbiously puts him off aswell but no get wat im meaning

Midge have you tried feeding your bird on a crow carcus.
Clean the chest area out of the crow and replace with quail or rat. This is every time you have finished flying using you left overs.
I do this with the spars to help them assosiate their quarry with food.

Take note of this. You won't find better advice in this case.

Yes take away the guts and breast and skin a chick and cut up and place in side. I would use rat but you would have to control the weight more. The reward will help the bird in the long run.
