I would just like to let people know on the forum that I had a fantastic day out with HunterPaul and His friend Stewart. They were so helpful to a complete beginner and were very patient with me blundering around. Despite my mistakes we caught three rabbits with Paul's fhh Jessie. She was absolutely marvellous and so patient with this blundering newbie. Thanks Jessie for your wonderful patience. Paul has very obviously put alot of work in to get her to the stage she is at.
I was also given my first experience of ferrets and working with a dog. Scuzz was brilliant. I nearly smuggled her home!!!! I also gutted my first rabbit under Paul's supervision!!
Thanks again Paul and Stewart for taking time with a newbie!:supz: :supz:

as a mere beginner to actually practicing falconry (still not got a bird, been swotting on it for the best part of a year), id say the best wayto learn is to go out with somebody who is able to fly a bird sensibly and actually knows whats what. thats what im doing and iv made a pretty good mate from it aswell which is swell and am going out again this weekend!
id advise this to anyone willing ot give the time falconry.

youre all trying to pinch my baby....listen mike....thanks for the kind words, its a shame the rabbits are not bolting ...had the same problem yesterday too...even though we were using a different pair of ferrets....dont know what thats all about as conditions were most favorable and we were in a completely different area.... any way you were a pleasure to be around and we will do it again before i start my job..... as stewart said we had a good day yesterday despite the bunnies being beligerant and not playing ball....
scuzz as usual worked herself into a pile of scratches and blood....
and mike as far as blundering around is concerned ... we all do a bit of that mate ...its just that i lie and say i meant to do it....HP

Well done Paul,
Nice to see you are doing something useful at last!!
IMHO any Falconer who takes the time to help a potential Falconer learn a thing or 2 should be applauded

I am glad that you had such a great day out.
I too at the moment have great days out with patient experienced Falconers.
Last week we flew 5 perigrine crosses over some of my land. These two guys had 65 years experience behind them and it was a joy to watch.
Last week perigrines over the south downs with 3 experienced guys and this weekend another 3 different falconers flying hawks.
Done some Lamping too which was enjoyable
great to be with a crowd you can always have a laugh with!

good to see the newbies getting out with the hawks and dogs and the little rabbit bolters themselfs the ferret,as think theres nothing better getting out with an every day bloke as think some of the falconry days with centres can be a little to easy and missleading so well done hunterpaul ps did you have a macdonalds for lunch pmsl

Going back 2 what you said about the rabbs not bolting....iv been told by a couple of people that if its windy the rabbs are very reluctant to bolt???????.....Iv been out today n the same happened to me...it was windy a bit too windy really..put big lad into a big set they just would not bolt..1 hour before i could get him back the rabbs would come to the entrance then go back down..What do you think?
Sorry for going off thread :-|

i use to ferret in Scotland and it is always windy or raining up there and never really had that problem. We only ever had problems if the ferrets killed down the hole (i hate digging) or if i went out with friends and we had made to much noise when making our way to the rabbit holes. but apart from that we use to bolt them in rain, wind and snow, i would love to say sunshine but we never had much of that.

Its just that 2 different people told me the same thing..Just wondered if that could have been the case!

not to sure. you never know we might just have harder rabbits with bigger balls and are willing to bolt in almost any weather. all i can say is that it is a little harder to bolt them but most of the time we had the use of a friends ferret who would not kill anything and she would work the hole until something bolted (bless her little heart).

it is said that rabbits are harder to bolt in the wind.... but as i said the conditions were perfect and the ferrets were coming out with fur mittens on but no bolters ....

We had a Ferret kill two on saturday last. It was only the First time she had killed underground.
on a few other occasions she had also blood on her feet so had scrapped with others.
The strange thing is that they are not being kicked up much either so they are down the Warrens.
I have busted a rib whilst trying to flush a bunny (that is as much as you are going to get:oops: ). And the ******* got away too!

maybe they are all this size http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=9269
doubt if a ferret would scare them enough to bolt them
