He is at his flying weight, approx 1.06lbs not entered yet.His perch is apprx 24 inches off the deck. The avery is enclosed apart from a small roof gap of about 36in and it faces West.Hope that helps.
if hes at flying weight and is on that low a perch i would be inclined to take him on for the night, or put him in his box in the garage. there may not be much frost getting into an avairy likr that, but id relaly need to see it. maybe be worth waiting to see what the other gusy think

if YOU are concerned about the temp outside being too cold take him into the house, but i wouldnt put him in a box,
But thats only my opinion.

If the bird will sit on a portable in the house use that route, if not box it. It willnot do any harm whatsoever, but keep away from gas fires, and cooking in progress.

You guys are a bunch of wimps!!......It was -10f which is about -20c here about two weeks ago and next week it is more of the same. Tasha and I are in Witchita for the night and then it is off to Dallas in the morning to visit Iamtheweasel and his new GF. We caught a bunny and Tasha wants me to get off so she can process the pictures.

On that pic it is -40°C  the cold is nothing for a bird, dampness is deadly !

I agree with Dan, the birds can stand cold but damp and cold and cause hypothermia. If your mews is dry. leave him out. hot to cold switches from the house can't do much good either, gives me a damn cold every winter when the wife has the heating up full blast !!!

If he is and u really cant bring him inside overnight, feed him right up. Let him have a good feed so he has plenty of fuel inside him to help keep him warm

Make sure there is no draught and that the ground in the mews does not freeze. Also if there has been any damage to his wing tips while you have been flying him, you'll want to be a bit careful.
Failing that..........get a lamp or place him in a box in your house overnight or if you can handle him slicing all over the floor, in the kitchen with some newspaper.

In fact the eastern Red-tailed Hawk is the biggest of them all, here is my breeding pair. Even the male is a very big boy with beefy feet.
And they live in aviaries just like all the others at -40°C;my Harris's,Lanners, Peregines and so on... without any heat source but protection from draught and damp. And a good supply of fresh whole animal food source. The same for trained hunting hawks on perches.

my harris is left out doors free lofted all year round ,as think if you bring your birds inside on cold nites then the bird is not going to harden to the cold weather which in most cases is the best flying days , just give them a little extra food to see them through the cold snap at nite and they should be fine as remember most if not all your birds are breed in this country so will be fine,i took my harris out yesterday for 2 hours and it was -4 c and he fly great and never sat on the fist shivering when called for a reward ,so being left out side free lofted does him no harm as long as hes not soaking wet

Anyway Mark its like saying should I put a Gyrfalcon in the freezer because its so hot outside... But your question is good as so many people don't understand that point:idea:

Following on from this thread then.....
If your bird does get wet out flying and the temps are dropping to below freezing, what do you do with a soggy bird ? Even putting it back in the draught free dry mews may cause a problem don't you think ? Its not happened to me so far but living on the damp Dorset coast, it might.
The original thread got me thinking !!!
Your views guys ?

I was out the other day and my hawk threw himself into a stream and had a long bath. By the time we got back to the car his feathers were frozen rock solid. 20 minutes in the box on the way home and he was merely damp. A couple of hours under the lamp and he was dry. He was out in the mews overnight and the temp dropped well below zero and he came up sparky and noisey the next day...no problem
From what I can gather cold is not the problem per se, but a combination of various factors are. Cold, damp, draught, weight, physical damage, sudden temp drop. Put a few of these together and you may be in trouble. But prevention is better than cure I suppose.
But I am no expert.
