hes doing great chris,, taken 11 head of erm "mixed birds" flying at 1lb 7 ,, lost a few weeks flying with the move .. long story short they both had to go to a local center where he came back minus a few tail feathers , so i have decided to put him in the chamber under lights ,,, (come on at 12 till 5 then increasing by 15 mins every week ) to see if he will go down early ,, and get a rip roarin start to next ,,,,

hi hannah
i gave the joiner a drawing with sizes,, he made it in sections at his workshop, and built it in one day at my house, i did the astro turf myself its fitted into naplock chrome bars so that i can lift it out , power wash it, spray with virkon and refit in minutes ... i do all the astroturf in 20 mins

How will you moult the gos out Brian,
Will it be tethered to the bow throughout the moult, moving between your mews and garden.

Will the lights work using this method. I've found that male goshawks will moult out before the season starts if freelofted and fed a quality diet.

Interested to see if the light method works in this way.

All the best Jim.

i know its OFF thread here but i was wondering about just that lately Jim......do you advocate freelofting with a view as i normallt do with most of the birs i have had or secluded??

does it make a diff ??

cheers

Chris

hi jim i recon he will have to be freelofted in his chamber for the lights to work, i dont know anybody who has used this method in BOP but it is widly used in budgies, canarys and poultry to bring into breeding /show condition ,,,, whats your thoughts jim ,,,

I'm not sure Brian how the lights will work. Have read articles but don't know of anyone personnally using them.

I would prefer to freeloft and have a half open roof that will allow the hawk sunlight and exposure to the weather. Brilliant feather condition this way, not sure how a hawk plumage would compare if moulted out under a solid roof.

I usually finish flying at the end of January then freeloft the gos straight away, first feathers drop in April and moulted out by mid -late August. Couple of weeks to get going again, gos ready to hunt at the latest second week of September - plenty of time to get the gos going for the season.

I'd put a flight on the side of your mews.

Yours Jim

i was thinking of using a portable flight that would go against the window bars which are removable , just knocking some ideas about just now,,,,,, i can also get full spectrum florecent lights which mimic natural sunlight, although staying in scotland i wouldnt know what that is,, we only have 2 seasons here august and winter!!!!! lol

Temp flight on the front would work but I think the window would need to be bigger to prevent feather damage whilst flying between quarters.

not a big job to make them bigger,,,,,, at the mo they are 26" square,,,, icrease them to what ? 36"square

well lads all i can say is, WOW

i swear the pics dont do it justice, not even 60% close

i went to brians house today and checked out his mews, i swear to God its so beautiful and massive, 4 people can stay in the 2 mews double bed and small wardrobe in each room and the middle weighing room is big enuff for a small kitchen and toilet and shower

its very nice and massive, loved it tae bits, brian u need to post the pic of your whole garden mate

and terra still doesnt like me standing next to brian, thats his hawk, she is obsessed about him :D

and i saw the male goshawk, he is a beauty, in for a early moult coz while as some of u may know, while brian was moving away he sent the hawks to a falconry to be cared for while he was shifting and the gos lost the tail feathers so its in for a early moult , have to say, loved the gos tae bits and i loved brians new house and the area is superb

well done brian
