i personally have never used them but to me theres too many different parts to them which relys on a good joint between them. We always have leather to hand so make our own. On a leather jess all you have to do is inspect the leather, also very cheap ( the leather ones )

Invaluable tool when hunting in groups/fieldmeet conditions especially on a cold Scottish winters day!

I wouldn't theter a bird with them too, but I'm thinking about getting some to try on the lure flying falcons in our show.

they look snazzy and thats about it im my opinion. Personally i think its just re-inventing the wheel. aylmeri jesses are undoubtably a massive leap forward from traditional jess however.

The reason I use them is that they are much simpler to slip on and off when hunting in groups and it suddenly becomes "your slip" especially if someone has slipped at ground quarry, missed, and recovered their hawk. If there are more bunnies about to be bolted or another hare gets up I guarantee I can get the bullets off much, much quicker than aylmeri/swivel etc - especially if your hands are freezing and/or jesses are a bit tight around the swivel.

They should NEVER be used to tether a hawk for this reason.

ps Mine dont look snazzy ;)

I will not use them, even on fieldmeets.

For fieldmeets a clip is easier :D

Bullet jesses= money making scam for someone who is trying to reinvent the wheel. But you never know a square one just might work!

if the bullets are the right size for the eyelet there is no way the bird can pick them out, and there are no knots for them to undo.

Some people have used inferior copies of the bullet jess system, ie nylon type with very thin diameter bullet and have had problems.
The design and build of the original bullet jesse mean they will work perfectly well in the field with the bird not being able to pick them out of the eyelets.

Obviously the people on here with negative views are talking from first hand personal experience, and not just heresay?
I am sure Jim the designer would welcome feedback from any actual problems relating to his design and manufacture.

A mate gave me some that he'd made, and they are a god send when at a field meet! But i wouldn't use them in any other situation saying that.

I only use then to quickly tether the bird when on a kill, I have seen birds lost through use of them while weathering.

I have used them since they first came out, but not on all birds and not in all situations, also use trad, on harris hawks , and some falcons, over the last couple of years slowly going back to tried and trusted, however those shown look very well made, apart from the swivel, I like to see if theres wear at the join, with my own eyes.. some falcons will just rip **** out of them, can be costly!! I find like many modern falconry changes, they do have some uses for me anyway.

never used them wont ever use them, I like my birds equiptment the way it is, wont use a cable tie as a bewit, as the first falconer that i ever met advocated, dont use cableties for tail mounts either.

Cable ties are for tieing cables, and bullits and birds dont mix.

I find clips at field meets work great and so deos a hood never mind what species of bird you are flying, If its hooded whilst waiting for its 'turn' then it aint going to be bating at 'other birds' Quarry.

will never use them. especially not when teathered. they just seem to me, that they can be unpicked quite easily!

I have a lot of experience with these with display birds at least 6 years+ (not my birds) all i ever saw was leg damage caused by the bullet rubbing with the back of the leg I much prefer to use std Mews and flying jesses also if you use the bullets with fixed flying jesses all you end up with is a tangled mess- I think they deffinatly have there place in the display arena when timing is a must but should be changed back after the displays.. Out of interest i tethered a male Harris hawk using the bullet jesses in a covered mews for three weeks and he did not manage to unpick the jesses, even with a lot of trying, typical HH.
I myself would use them as a field jess for speed and ease of use but not as a mews jess.
Fitted to an aylmeri the bullet does not come into contact with the leg, so i am very interested in leg damage, any pic`s.of equipment fitted etc.
Feedback always accepted and forwarded.

It wasnt actually these metal ones it was the rope/plastic ones from falconfayre whilst sat on a block the button would drop through to the stop which is about 1cm back and button would rub on the leg- the damage was always on the back right hand side of the legs. Mike

Thats the problem with imitations, people just copy the idea with inferior materials and think they are on to a winner, whereas the original designs and materials have been well thought out.
Might be a lesson there to us all?
