View Full Version : psycho male '05 altai saker

after the tragic loss of my mhh last year to a weak heart and my bengal to a stoat or the likes i found a great big hole in my days and sought out another bird

the land i have available and quarry dictated a longwing would be better than a hawk so i chose an altai saker

I picked up an '05 male altai saker weighed in at 1lb12.5 out of the hack pen boxed him up for the drive home.

got home after 8 hours in total on the road and rain sleet and snow and am at the very least very pleased with him . Sat with him on the fist last night hooded to get him used to being on the fist.

got up today to work on making him to the hood sat in a darkened room and started the process describes in emma fords falconry art and practice all was going well till the third attepmt to removed the hood when he baited so looks like i am looking at a long process..

More to come as and when

well picked psycho up today and he was rather chilled out allowing me to touch his chest, feet, and beak with no problems, i sat with him on the fist hooded for a while so he settled nicely and decided to see how he was out of the hood in daylight so loosened the straps on the hood and left it sat undone on his head for 10 seconds or so then removed the hood.. He sat looking at me as if to say yes and you want  not once did he bait and he just sat taking in the world :D :D i noticed him focus on an object in the corner of the room and start to bob his head so on went the hood before he bated :D

i will complete this section after i have tried him with some food later

Update well just fed him on the fist hood off food on glove no interest so rehooded and waitied 5 mins unhooded and offered food by hand and he took it and sat happily munching on the glove

hey,my male sakers fat weight is 2lb, does this mean hes a altai saker? because as far as i knew i thought he was just a regular falco cherrug? lol but now im thinking....

UKJay74
09-01-2006, 10:38 PM
i think it all depends:D if he came out of a seclusion pen at 2lb are u sure it is male and not female??psycho has been in a hack pen for a while building up muscle:) heavier than fat so i think personally an dmay get slaughtered for the comment you have a falco cherrug and there it ends

i dot prfess to know longwing species but i believe mine to be a falco cherrug altaicus

No Cyclone..... what it means is the bird has been in the Hack Pen and has burned off all the fat flying around so he has lost weight but gained some muscle and is almost at hunting weight now. Cutting too much off him now will remove muscle not fat.

well last night due to psycho taking 2 chicks i left him unhooded (big Mistake but neccesary) got up today with psycho literally going psycho trying to get away from me, he wouldnt climb onto the fist and bit at the hood every time it was close after a lil while i manage to hood him and settle him down. went through the day with more manning and hood work unhooding in various places in the house he seems to be comfortable with it now, weight today was 1lb 11 so and he seemed happy enough to eat on the fist i am going to try step ups tomorrow and see how things go..

Am pleased with his progress so far :D

woke up and came down too take up psycho and rehood him ready for the day ahead. Today he was a little more chilled but still bating after a minute he settled on the fist to be rehooded :supz: so day went as normal wandering about with him on the fist removing his hood aat different places and for different amounts of time. set him down late afternoon when kids came in whilst i went to hardware store to get cable ties and some other bits i needed:D

came back leaving him settled on his block for a while and weighed him he weighed in at dead on 1lb11oz so prepared a couple of chicks fortodays task of step ups, once again following emma fords method of start feeding and setting onto block at same level so i was sat on floor next to his block for this purpose..

he successfully completed several step ups during his feed so left him unhooded for a hile then placed him back on his block so i can settle for my dinner

more to come

Weight 1lb10oz 3/8

Well today was pretty much a re run of yesterday came in to psycho to take him up and hood him and he bated awhile before settling on the fist to be hooded. roamed the house garden and the likes unhhoding and rehooding for different lengths of time and in different places which went quite well. set him on his block hooded for a little while whilst i yolked his food came back into room sat down and loosened his hood straps leaving it on till i had put my glove on and got comfy, once settled i untied his leash and held it in my right hand and unhooded him with chick on the glove he started tucking in so i lifted the glove slightly and he stepped up after a couple of nibbles i placed him back onto the block and repeated the process this continued for about 12 goes and everytime he stepped up..

i am such a happy bunny :supz:

well today started pretty much as the last couple the usual bait away as i come to re hood him in the morning but he is settling more and more each day and getting easier o get on the fist albeit with a little pick up piece.

went through the usual routin of manning unhooding and the likes. and psycho is getting better and better.

late in the afternoon i decided lets try some jumps alas i didnt get too far and it ended up as a step up exercise again which he did without even enticing him with a pick up piece :D and this continued for a little while and i introduced a reward he fed up whilst still steppng up(voluntarily) on 3 chicks :D:D :supz:

15 and 16/01/06

well yesterday has been very similar to the last few psycho weighed in at 1lb 10 1/4 walked about doing the usual routine of un hooding hooding different lengths of times and places
come training time i removed his hood on the block and went to get a chick to put on the glove an he stepped up without request and before food was on show although i wanted to get him doing jumps this alone made me feel good and i carried on with trying jumps but got step ups :supz:

16/01/05

weight 1lb 10 on the nose

well after spending the day with paul at his place crow hawking whilst pscho ws blocked out there i got home let the little guy dry out cos he decided to bate and hit the bath next to him, i picked him up and weighed him then settled him on the block with his hood loosened whilst i got a chick on the glove i removed his hood and had the glove about 6" away so he had to jump not stretch to get his feed, cheeky sod tried to lean but when he realised he wasnt getting it he jumped :supz: i looked like a kid at xmas so i let him have the feed on the chick and placed him back for another go this time i moved a bit further away maybe a foot and a half and again he happily jumped over :D final attempt i got him on the glove and put his long leash on and had my fist 2.5 ft from him again he made it :supz: soo pleased with his progress

well got up this morning and prepared myself for the usual bating session as i go to rehood psycho as i come down i can hear him jumping about on and off his block i get his hood and my glove and a couple of chick legs to see if today he will go for a pick up piece when i get into the lounge he is sat looking at me as if to say you aint picking me up i know what your gonna do but as i crouch to get him he spots the chick legs and hops up no worries just a little scream at me.

once he setlled on the fist and had finished the legs i go to hood him and i was totally stunned no bate no hiss or squawk he just sat there and let me get the hood on and fastened :D :supz: i am so pleased once hooded i weighed him before usual manning and the likes today 1lb10 1/4.

More to come once i get back to his jumps

well this afternoon he weighed 1lb10 on the nose again .. i removed his hood and sat him on the block whilst i got settled to try him with more jumps, instead of starting small and ncreasing distance i decided to get him to go for the full length of his longest leash 3.5-4ft after a little look round he focused on the chick on the glove a couple of seconds later he jumped straight over and started to tuck in :D second go i stood up slightly so he was coming up about a ft above the block and the 3.5-4ft which he did readily and quickly once i pointed out there was food there..

on his last chick i deided to attach it to his lure and see how he went he looked atit alittle funny at first and wasnt sure but after a little pause he hopped of the block just to the side of the lure and toddled over to get his feed. i let him munch that down and used two chick legs i saved to get him back on the glove to end the session which he took up and munched :supz: am so pleased with the progress now i am going to try incorperate intro of his lure and jumps and hopefully work for the creance next

well todfay it seems everything has clicked into place in psychos mid i got up today to re hood psycho and he got straight onto the fist without a pick up piece and sat nice and calmly to be hooded ,no bating nothing. i did my usual work of wandering about with him and the likes occasionally putting him on his block unhooded with his lure next too him which he kept jumping down to an attacking :D.

tonight i did my usual jump work with him and he came on great guns 1st one he took his time with as he got his bearings but 2nd 3rd and 4th he jumped straight of as soon as seeing the food :supz:

well tomorrow out for some calling offwork will let you know how it goes

well today didnt go as planned proceedings moved out into the field which may have been a bit too much for his mind to take in as all i got out of him was bate flap bate :( i thought i would leave it for the night but also thought i would try him with the lure indoors where alot of his flights (jumps) have taken place but still to no avail

any suggestions guys i am at a loss he is at a weight that he responds quickly to jump to the fist but is not interested in the lure now ??
maybe a fist flight then everything else off the lure?? (saying that as i type this the little toerag jumps to the lure for food

will let you know how his 2nd chick goes:D

get him back out in the field tomorrow jay, give him a couple of calls to the fist increasing it to about 6ft. Then stand about 10ft away from him & lob the lure to one side of him.If he's keen enough he will jump down-if not quick call to the fist with a small reward & leave it at that. No more food. Tomorrow same again, should be on it good & proper
Try & do his training outside from now on as well mate.

I wouldnt advise flying a Rook Hawk past Spring mate. Too much cover to dive into, too many crops and too many young birds that will make your bird lazy.

22-01-2006, 10:51 AM
with regards to flying psycho off the fist to the lure is it your fist he's flying from while you throw the lure away from him or does nursey hold him while you throw the lure towards him?
reason im asking is because ive always worked the bird to the lure for a short period as a way of recalling otherwise the bird is continually looking outwards so when a slip is missed it may ignore you swinging the lure. just thinking about it mate thats all, just curious lol
