You aren't going to be catching much with one though! They only take live up to about a day old pheasant chick, after that you have just about had it.
They are carrion eaters mainly.

I have flown Yellow Billed Kites in South Africa and yes they mostly scavenge, but are a joy to see flying.
I think there is no reason why a PRed one could not be taught to catch birds, they are large enough, your only obstacle it overcoming their natures, like trying to use a Common Buzzard to catch pheasants, it can be done, but I personally could not be bothered.

Kites are light for their body size, hence the bouncy type flight with minimal wing movement, they're very agile and cheeky too but the feet aren't big enough for any middle to large quarry.... in the 30's the red kites were hunted to near extinction in wales as people thought they were taking the local phessies but in reality they would prob only manage something the size of a young rabbit. Beautiful birds tho, would love one but wouldn't make a good hunter.

The guy that taught me had a black kite that was at tame hack, and used to fly in during demo and he used to throw a pieces of meat for it, It was spectacular.
I would doubt whether you will be able to teach a kite to hunt anything, Hawkmaster did you find the Kites personality to be 'sensible'? enough. May not be the right word but you probably get the idea what I'm asking

when we go upto comrie, theres many a time when we are out with our birds and up above us are a group of four of them. Better too watch in the wild than in displays i think.

hi
Red kites are georgeous birds! I have only seen them in the wild.
has anyone read the book kite by melvin burgees (i think) we read it in school.#
I would love a kite I think that not hunting wouldn't bother me that much if I were to get one they still look great in flight and apparently will catch food you through them on the wing!!
