ferrets and land required here then me thinks........but not necc that order.......by the way the HH will catch more than rabbits.....thought about lamping or corvis flying from the window.....( on permission land only of course)......
ye ive thort about it just wanted to get her on rabbits first before training her to lamp would like to how hard is it to train them on the lamp an corvids ill try later on or even next season shes nearley had a coupple of squrrel she needs to learn how to fly them

I've found most squirrel bites occur on a bird's toes rather than on the leg, in which case, of course, chaps are of little use.
hi i know it wont stop it getin bit off i dont fly them very often its ony on the rear occasion you know wot i might stop flyin them any way thears not a lot of sport in it an there **** to fly anyway

Squirrels you mean? Personally I think the complete opposite. In my view they're a first class quarry.

My female HH had a squirrel on sunday, not the sort of thing i go out of my way to catch i might add. She chased it round a tree and then back through some bushes on foot towards me. She nailed it after a short chase running along the ground just in front of me and i could see that she only had hold of it on the back end. I knew i had to get in there fast and secure the little furry thing to stop it biting her, so in the bushes i go head first, i managed to grab the squirrel round the head and pull them both clear of the bushes. As i was doing this the squirrel thanked me for getting it out of the bush by biting me on the thumb through my hawking glove. It was only a little nip and didn't hurt to much. Its a good job i had a tetanus jab about 2 years ago after a dog bite. Just glad i saved the birds feet and legs from a bite, i think she can deal with squirrel ok but i would never like to leave her with one longer than is necessary.

my advice to anybody wanting to hunt squirels is,keep a bottle of batryl handy because your going to need it,ive never had a squirel bite that has not gone septic, and its usually 3/4 weeks after the bite,,,danm good quarry though thats sods law,,,,tarqs

Ya'll must have some nasty foul mouthed squirrels over there as I have never had any problems with squirrel bites on my reds and my harris just got bitten pretty good a few weeks ago when he tried to tangle with a fox squirrel that outweighed him 2 to 1. No signs of any problems. For the really bad bites, I usually put a bit of betadine on the wound to aid in killing off bacteria etc.

Squirrels are excellent sport for a hawk and there is nothing that will get the bird fitter than flying them up and down up and down yes they do bite and i would suggest flying just one harris at a time as the only bad bites my bird incurred were when flown with other hawks they dont concentrate on thier footing because other birds are trying to bind aswell. My old female goes straight up to any drays and starts pulling them apart. we have even had them go to ground in rabbit holes but the ferret soon bolts them back out. Just be sure to get in thier quick, you may want to improve her footing on other quarry first though.

That's encouraging. I was beginning to think I was the only one who rates sqirrels highly as a quarry. I would rather fly one squirrel than several rabbits.
