As an avid lover:heart: of the Peregrine falcon (All sub species) I would like to enquire as to who in the world possesses the best breeding lines? My favourite sub species is Scottish and Aleutian. I am also interested as to what people define as a top line bird. Do you individually consider size, shape, colour, tenacity, hunting ability or a mixture of all or some?

Hi Stormrider,
My old pair of Peregrines are Martin Hargreaves and Ray Turner produced. They are both Peregrinus Peregrinus. I think they are the best in the world! But then I suppose we all do or at least should think that of our birds.
My combination of spec's are efficiency in the field, manners, and reliability. Most of that can at least be influenced by handling and training so we should all be able to produce the best birds in the world! After that it is all looks, colour, size etc which does not make better birds, just prettier ones to the individual eye or better ones through size, to the posers eye!

Hi Stu, this is a difficult question to answer M8. In my oppinion I have some really good blood lines in my Scottish Peregrines and produce some excelent stock from them. I also have some really nice Imprints and will probably try to reproduce some pure Peregrines from them this year as most of the time I use these birds to produce Gyr x Peregrines and I don't want to loose these lines. I am not and never will say I have the best because there is always someone who thinks they have better and find it just causes arguments to blow your own trumpet and say you have the best. There are some stunning birds out there, so there is plenty to choose from.
I also have a few pairs of Peales Peregrines mainly Aleutian Blood lines. One example can be seen on my website and I have just posted a pic of a Female on my For Sale thread so have a look at that one as well, although the pic is not the best quality it's all I can find at the moment.
As for consideration of ability of the birds in the field we try our best to fly as many of our breeding birds as possible and we do put potential breeders out on loan for a couple of years to see how they perform and we try as best we can to keep our eye on birds we have sold to make sure they are doing well in the field but it is not always possible to get feed back especially when a bird is sold on for one reason or another.
Forums like the IFF are a great tool in our box of tricks because we can get feed back on sold birds by just watching how a bird is doing on the posts if they are sold to a Forum member.

So many falconers just don't bring justice to their birds by doing poor or low performances due to their own lack of talent and undrestanding of bird training. I'm more concerned about inbreeding and the quality of food given from day of hatch untill fully grown...

I have had two of Terrys Peregrine hybrids(out of Tiercel 'Blue') and know of 2 other guys with falcons out of that same Peregrine and for temprement and tenacity and courage they have been great.
A good guy to deal with, but really tight on the discounts!!
Going into his hack pen to pick one is experience.

Thanks for the details on the UK breeders guys. I will consider these for when I get my own female.
In relation to the beginning of my post :- What I am trying to do here is open up a discussion about breeders worlwide for the purposes of discussing the traits of each breeding legend, their techniques and their birds. I want to see if we can identify common traits in their breeding techniques (that people may be aware of) to see if their breeding techniques might actually contribute towards the quality of the bird.
Im sorry for not explaining the post correctly. I was at work when I typed the original post and my head was up in the clouds with other stuff aswell.

You will find some very good peregrines in germany. Line breed for many years but it is difficult to pin point just one breeder as germany is full of them. Some of the crow hawking lines in germany are very good they only use birds that have killed more then 1000 crows etc. Germany has so many small breeders that it will be diffiult to say how has the best in germany. Christian Saar has some very good peregrines. They go straight back to the wild birds as their ansasters were tacken for the release programs.

Now that sounds like a breeder who does his homework. 1000 kills per bird is amazing. I wouldnt mind a young one from a parent like that. By the sounds of it the Peregrine is a well sought after bird in Germany.
