Lost near annathill, moodiesburn area. north east of glasgow, west of cumbernauld. wearing tail bell, permanent fliers, telemetry, on leg.
well folks, ellie has flown the coop.
was out with her yesterday and she was doing well, slope-soaring etc, and responding well, she then sailed out into the wind and flew off towards a woodland. i tracked her there with the telemetry and was getting a signal then it went wonky and i lost the signal. i returned to the car to replace the battery on the reciever, (which was fine), and picked up a signal at the farm.
The only place i could recieve a signal was the farm where i parked the car and a strong signal at that. but she wasnt there. i thought that the signal must have been bouncing off the buildings and she must be close, so i searched close by. (the farm is close to where i last saw her).
i searched high, low, far and wide and couldnt pick up the signal again, only at the farm. i couldnt understand it. this drew my attention away from other areas as i thought she must have been there.
anyway, i returned to this farm after dark to let them know that i didnt find her. i could still pick up a signal here. i asked them to keep an eye out and would be back the following day. we got chatting about the signal and why it should be strong here. i was beginning to think she was i their house having tea. anyway. this farm doubles as a haulage yard. the woman pointed out that they had a tracking system for their lorries. Ah!! i asked where the anteni was and she pointed to the from of the building to a small ariel type thing. what do you know? this is the signal i had been picking up and that was interfering with my telemetry. B*st*rd! chasing shadows all over the place.
needless to say i never got her despite being out all night with the telemetry ciricling the area. only thing i could pick up was haulage yards, a huge CB ariel and every HGV in the nieghbourhood.
i aint sure if the systyem is now ****ed and wont pick her up after all the interference but it aint working right anymore, and i aint gona find her this way. help needed.
i have rung IBR, and she is ringed and registered, i am just hopefull that she is found by the right person and not some arse.
posters are out, farms have been visited, etc, etc, just a case of waiting.
no doubt, i will be chasing buzzards all over the countryside for the next few weeks. wish me luck folks, i need it.

Is there any of your mates in the area with telemetry that matches yours for frequency? If there is ask them to go out with you and try their set as it may be your reciever playing up. Also if you can lay your hands on a Mag Mounted antenna and drive around locally you may get a signal it's worth a try. HH do not normally stray far from where you loose them, normally within a mile or 2, and she may just return to where you were flying to look for you. Don't give up I am sure you will find her soon.
Best of luck M8 shame your so far from us or we would help you ourselves.

have you flown her with other harris' if so try taking out another bird she is familiar with... if she is down on anythig it will spot her way before you do...also they get the competetive thing on the go, this may attract her back to your vicinity if the other bird is in the air ...look out for her being mobbed.... and is she wearing bells ...keep those ears open... swing a lure etc ... but remember to look down as well asup ...she may be on a kill or down a hole.... get to the area before light ..as if you get a cold night she will be hungry and your the easy meal.... then as the light hits start the calling swinging etc...she may with any luck come a looking for you... good luck mate wish i was there to help physically...

you never know SF, the winds we have got today she could be closer to you than me. in fact she could be closer to edinburgh.
been out all day trying to get a signal, no luck apart from when i tracked a signal to a small woodland with a lovely cottage inside. squirrels on the feeders, rabbits and doves on the lawn, songbirds in the trees. get the picture, well, i knew she wasnt there with all this wildlife about. i got a strong signal from the house apparently the old woman has a thing for calling for a home help, alarm type thingy. must have been that. anyway wasnt her.
the telemetry. no one has got the same one. its a skytrack system. ********.
i went to get the lukesander from my mates house but it was at another mates house and he was at work. whats the chances eh??
sods law i think they call it. prey for me folks.

thanks guys, i guess you all know what its like eh? not good.
i may try that HP, cheers mate, she is flown in a cast with my wee male.
i will go back but as far as the telemetry goes i dont think i can count on it.
another thing. the gales up here today have been really something so she could well be blown halfway accross the country by now.
if only i had got the lukesander it wouldnt have come to this. i will kick her arse when i get her. thanks for your support guys, appreciated. will keep you updated as to any developments.

another thing. the gales up here today have been really something so she could well be blown halfway accross the country by now.
if she killed when you lost her she probably wont have gone up in the gales, so could well still be in the general area she was lost.
Good luck mate.

no idea of the frequency andy, sorry mate.
ive been all over the shop and have been out at nights trying to get a signal but no joy.
ive no problem believing she will survive and do ok. she is an awesome hunting bird, fully fit and game as they come.
just hope its the right kind of person that finds her not some ******. you know the things that go through the head. someone has shot her, hit by a car, etc, etc.
hope to see her soon, and i wont give up hope. i am aware she could return at any point. just hope ibr phone me soon.
i feel very useless as there aint much i can do. just wait and pray.
thanks for your posts guys,

first reported sighting of ellie today.
got a call about 3.00 from a guy who has a small holding close to where she was lost. he was in some woodland and was watching the deer when a bird, he thought was a buzzard flew into the woodland above them. he watched it a while then noticed the jesses on her. he gave me a call but i was miles away. i called my mate and he went to the area and was shown where she was but she had moved on. good thing is that she was little more than a mile from where i lost her despite the gales we have been having. i guess she has caught something and is hanging around here. i got there about an hour later and 5 of us split up and walked the fields swinging lures and whistling, but to no avail. we never saw her. i was searching down-wind from where she went missing. she was spotted upwind about a mile or so.
i will return tomorrow and have a look.
one small problem which has got me worried.
there is another small holding about 1/2 a mile from this sighting.
the guy has chickens etc and it would definately appeal to a hungry hawk.
so i asked my mate to go there and speak to the people whilst i went to another farm.
my mate went just to let them know and to ask them to keep an eye out and that if she showed up here and happened to take a chicken that they would be reimbursed and compensated etc.
the ****** there said that if she shows up there he would waste no time in shooting her. pure *****. he would skewer her etc.
this guy is a ***** and even went as far to say he puts bait out for the buzzards (dead rabbit) so he can shoot them. he hates birds of prey.
i have to find her before he does. so will be there tomorrow.
i know the wildlife liason officer and although he aint breaking the law by putting bait out, the WLO will waist to time in going to his door. he is real staunch.
problem is, he will know where it has come from and then he will possibly actively seek out my bird and shoot her. he has permission to shoot over all the land where she has been seen etc.
there is also a chance the guy is full of **** and hot air. but i doubt it.
problem is ive had a few days off work looking for her and now i have to go back tomorrow. i will sneak off though and go and have a look. here is hoping.

Good luck mate - this is frustrating - keep us informed...

just hope she return safe as there are no shortage of these types about.
my pride and joy is my hawks, his is his peacocks.
anyone know what peacock tastes like???
i will be speaking to the WLO, the local authority countryside rangers etc.
this guy was investigated for setting badger snares last year, but no proof.
setting snares on traditional badger routes is just nasty. he knew what he was doing.
got a few things to sort out at work then i will be going over to look for ellie.

a massive thanks to maxwell of the forum who so selflessly gave up their free time to come out and help me look for ellie today.
fantastic. trapsing the fields in cold, wet conditions swinging a lure and calling on her, thanks ever so much Maxwell.
no i wasnt leaning on a gate watching, i was searching too.
got called away to work later and she stayed on to look. what an absolute star.
great many thanks to maxwell, and if there is anything i can do for you whatsoever than just pm me, anything at all.
still no sign of ellie and to be honest i am doubting the sighting we recieved yesterday. with the gales etc we have been having its doubtful she would have went up-wind. still you never know.
also got a call from the IBR who had a reported sighting of a harris in "Forth", south lanarkshire. went to check it out this morning but all i could find was buzzards where the sighting was reportedly from.
whats worse a wild goose chase, or chasing a wild buzzard.
fingers are still crossed.
thanks Max, your a gem.

harrisi,
I know you don't know the exact frequency of the transmitter but was the system on 216mhz or 173mhz ?
I think this acts as a lesson for all users of telemetry, make a note of the actual channel, tuning point and frequency - this will enable others to help if needed.

similar type mate, skytrack. 433.92 mhz
problem is the batteries will be dead anyway so i dont even bother taking the reciever out anymore. no point.
ive been off work looking for ellie for the past wee while but had to return today. luckily i got away for a few hours to look for her but got distracted by the Forth sighting and headed off there to take a look.
next i am off is wednesday and i shall be going out with my male HH to see if i can temp her out. lots of walking to be done.
with the gales we were experiencing i refrained from taking the wee man out before now as i didnt want another accident. hopefully the weather will be better come wednesday and i shall go for a long walk with him.
as i mentioned i dont think she is here anymore.
i reckon the sighting was a misguided one and it wasnt her.
the ****** which threatened to shoot her is still adament.
ive a mate who is a countryside ranger and unknown to me went to his door yesterday as he has been shooting foxes and displaying them on the side of the road at his house.
he told my mate that he does it to annoy people and how he has been trying to kill the sparrowhawk which visits his garden and the buzzards also.
he spoke of the missing hawk, (ellie) and how he was going to shoot her. my mate didnt know it was my hawk till today.
this guy is (in his words) a head case. who would admit to trying to kill protected birds to a countryside ranger?? and who in their right head would display foxes at the front of his house?? complete nutter.
i just hope she is well away from here and doing ok. i will catch up with her soon enough.
thanks to all for your support and best wishes, appreciated.

Was this Pm also a sighting in Forth or somewhere else?
Yes maxwell, the sighting was in Forth.
it was from a gent who does some work at Dryburgh Faconry centre.
They got a call yesterday reporting the harris. apparently the person who saw it knows about these things so they are confident it was a positive sighting. The centre then contacted the IBR who in turn contacted me.
ITS A POSSIBLE.
It may not be ellie but someone else could be missing a harris.
2 sighting 1 day apart, 15 miles apart. mmmmmmmmmm???
I am doubting the first initial sighting where she was lost. The gales etc have caused me to think she is not in this area any more. Forth?? mmm, not sure but in any case it would appear there is a harris in and around this area.
Maxwell
17-01-2006, 08:35 AM
15 miles isn't too much esp. if you wonder about the first sighting anyway and also as its been so windy although wind direction doesn't really support Forth does it? Or does it?
But fingers crossed - you never know.

my kestrel went missing not that long ago for a week and ended up 6 miles
away and in cold frosty weather no wind

Brilliant - that's what's needed I think - a few more people actively looking in their own area.
There are quite a few members around about where Ellie was lost - get yourselves out there and swing a lure - she may show herself! I've had a go - but not being local - I wasted a lot of time trying to find my way around - a few busy roads around there - you can't exactly wander across the motorway swinging a lure (although some may suggest I do so!)
The more the merrier - hope she's found soon.

HI HARRISII,
I don't know if this is of any use to you at all but i was traveling along the A70 between Carnwath & Carstaires village today at aprox 10.20 am when i saw a white ford escort estate traveling slow with about 3 cars quewed behind it. As i was along side the escort ther was a large mature Harris in conflict with a group of crows/rooks in the air along side the main road ! Does she hunt crows?
At that point i was traveling about 60mph so couldn't stop but went further along about 400yrds to turn came back to the area i saw it and sat for about 15min but saw nothing.
Now if this was someone flying out of the car window i am not sure, but if they were they are very iresponsible and sooner or latter are going to cause a serious accident or end up with one dead Harris as (1) This is a very buisy road (2) they had no idea the traffic was behind them.
On the other hand the escourt and its ocupants could have been totaly inocent and just watching the hawk with the crows?
Where i saw this is only a very short distance as the crow fly from Forth.
PM me if i can be of further asistance
