I use a tightly woven, NON looped carpet on one, foam wrapped in hockey tape on another and bare wood for the other perch. This allows Mort (Male RT) His choice of perches. He prefers the tightly woven NON looped carpet the most.

no problems here. i always use it. the real stuff not plastic door mat stuff.
the cleaning. i find a wire brush is great for cleaning them. it picks up all fur, feathers etc from the surface and the brushing action expells most of the dirt, dust etc which falls in between the fibres. a wee hand help hoover is good for getting most of the dust too.
a spray of vydephor or vircon is used to disinfect the perch.
carpet is occasionally used, but is harder to clean than astro'.
natural surfaces like wooden branches are hard to beat and i have a mix of astro and natural wood in my aviary.

Strange really because most wild birds will perch on a hard surface.
I know Astroturf alleviates pressure points on the birds feet but you would think this would affect the bird in the wild also.
Obviously the multitude of different perch diameters more than makes up for this.
But then what about the wild bird you always see on it`s favourite perch day in day out?
Obviuosly one for our learn`ed friends.

true true, but our captive friends have fewer options as where to perch.
best to provide differing diameter perches with a mix of coverings, dont you feel?

Astro turf is easy to clean and free as there is a 6 pitch 5 aside park just shut and all the turf has been left......

possibly its to do with th variety of perches that the wild bird stands on rather than the same one day in day out in the avary or bow i dont know

lots of different thickness and shape perches, some have bits of astro mainly where the bird lands when flying round. Some perches have bark left on, tho it can lead to mites and stuff getting under. I spray for that quite often tho. Don't have a problem with the astro getting dirty as the birds have "shelves" they prefer to eat on cos they are flat. An astro door mat on the floor in a favoured corner is also good as it helps hold the food still and I just take it out and power hose it. The MHH likes an upturned milk crate as a dinner table, nice and easy to clean too.

go to halfords and buy some cheap bike tyres and then cut them into lengths.Nail or staple to your perches with astro turf and then the bird has a choice?

Thick NON LOOP carpet, astroturf and coconut mat all mixed in the aviary.
We bin the carpet and replace it, the astroturf get cleaned with jet washer but still is renewed once a year.
