Feather damage (help me solve this please)

Hi folks, I'm after some advise please.

Over the last few years I've had trouble with feather damage on the inside edge of the secondary feathers on the backs of my Harris. First thoughts were obviously mites which were treated with different bird insecticides.

Avian vet/ specialist couldn't find any mites on my birds.

It starts after about 3 months of flying them.

I'll try and post pictures if I can find out how to . Any help or advice would be kindly appreciated?

Thanks

Do you use a tail bell?

I think you're right Matt. Is it fraying on the leading edges where the wings cross over its back and rubs the tail mount Ie, telemetry mount or bell or both Atb Chris

Its not something the vet came up with. The two birds with this issue are located in two different pens on separate premises. But both birds are flown everyday.

It only happens on the same feathers on each bird. Would of thought it would of been across all feathering and not just the secondaries on the back.??!

So no tail bell or any other furniture in that area?

I still think it can be where the feathers are rubbing against the tail mount, do you have a photo of the entire bird from the back, I have a similar issue with the male Gos, but don't worry too much about it, as by the time the feathers have became a little worn it is time to feed him up and mould him out anyway. not 100% sure this is the same issue mind as it's a job to tell from your photos, all the best Chris

Thanks for the reply Chris. I'll take another picture tomorrow. I have to fly mine through the moult due to work. I just can't see it being mite or moth larva as the damage would be all over the feathers and not just concentrated on the secondary feathers.
