Re: Sparrowhawks a Falconers Guide

She is stunning Midge. Shame you've not got much of the season left.

Re: Mini Sparviter

Yeah, all birds are protected in the UK Ricky. I have a licence from Natural England to kill 50 blackbirds a year. I have taken 12 so far this season.

Re: Mini Sparviter

Great photo Alex, thanks for sharing. Reece is currently stuck in the house with chickenpox, but I was out with my old friend Robert Penney beating for me today.

Re: Watered down goshawks?

So what you are saying is that the hawk converts dietary fat to energy? That makes sense and explains why a fat, well-fed hawk would hunt with verve and gusto, but if it has been kept tethered for a...

Re: Watered down goshawks?

I lost a hog-fat, completely unfit goshawk out of an aviary one evening and I spent all the following day chasing him around the countryside. Even though he wasn't at all hungry, he spent all day...

Re: Sparrowhawks a Falconers Guide

Thanks Shaun. "Hunting time" for me begins at hard penning and I would still expect a spar to be very noisy for the first couple of months of hunting. I consider this to be "normal" behaviour for a...

Re: Sparrowhawks a Falconers Guide

Hi Shaun. Could you possibly find the time to write a paragraph or two for us about "right imprinting"? My methods always produce noisy birds, then the noise diminishes with time spent hunting - just...

Re: Sparrowhawks a Falconers Guide

Yes Shaun, I'm pretty sure they are. A quote from JPJ:

An imprinted sparrowhawk calls but it is a nice noise and pretty quiet, it is also very useful for helping to spot your bird in a tree. They...

Re: Sparrowhawks a Falconers Guide

Most spars are noisy imprints so why not?

Re: Sparrowhawks a Falconers Guide

Yeah, he is a bit of a nob... I still love him though   A lot of other sparviters have given their input too, so probably worth a read even if you don't like Ben! ;)

Re: Mini Sparviter

Thanks for the replies. I dropped Reece off at school this morning, then out with Needle. She took another two blackbirds! I am looking forward to Xmas school holidays so Reece can come and help me...

Re: Brittany spaniel pics

I have heard it said that they mature at 8, then they are ready to retire at 10.

My Britt is as tall as my mate's GSP and I have certainly seen smaller GSPs.

Re: Brittany spaniel pics

Brittany owners always get remarks like this as soon as we start saying how hot headed they are, and that we need to use heavy handed tactics. Britts are not all the same, fair enough, and I never...

Re: Mini Sparviter

Hi Ian. I know a lot of people who have said the same. This has been my main perch for the last six years or so (sparrowhawks and goshawks) and have not bent a feather yet. I do not have a tailgaurd....
