Forbes' original 'study' was paid for by Garlands.
Hardly worthy of quotation if it isn't peer reviewed - which it isn't.

Nothing wrong with rabbit,as long as its mixed with something.people feed entierly chicks as its cheaper and easier.i minced quail, chick de yolked and mice and beef then after a week old quail, chick with yolk and rabbit and beef.used that on all owls and falcons and even spars and done very well.

In fairness, the Forbes article makes a lot sense. But if there's one thing that I've learned its that one should never follow advice religiously just because of credentials. Get second and third opinions and in the end use common sense.

Thanks too paul, and thanks too neil for the info, good advise! i believe a varied diet is the key to a healthy bird, especially this time of year with the birds moulting. i feed rabbit and pheasant from what i've caught through the season, chopped up and portioned and checked for lead, then put in the freezer. doc's and fresh beef from my butcher, sometimes sprinkled with vitamins.... and rats and quail. seems to work for me.....

I've been looking for that article.
I thought it was Garlands but you've got me thinking now.

There is a new article in the latest BFC newsletter and chick analysis is at the top under mice for protein and calcium, yet I would still feed chick only twice a week, rest of week quail, rat and rabbit.

During the hunting season, fly on chick and rabbit and feed up from kills, my other birds don't get fed till I return and fresh kills are normally given warm.

My Redtail is 20 years old and never been coped, if you are coping each year, then you're not feeding a varied diet in my opinion

I cope my bird every year, sometimes twice a year, she gets plenty of rabbit heads and a varied diet. coping in my eyes is part of good falconry husbandry. maybe my birds beak just grows very quick.
