Default % Equipment Weight On A Hawk

I have got a cryptic reference in an old flight diary of a guideline of 2% maximum equipment weight for a Peregrine but I can't for the life of me remember where I got that information from!

Does that sound reasonable?

Hi Sam - I routinely add 1oz of equipment to every peregrine I fly...from 18oz tiercels to 34oz falcons so we are talking 3% to 5% with absolutely no adverse effects.

I always do the final release of rehab peregrines after giving them a bursting crop of fresh pigeon or duck. This can weigh as much as 200g or 20-25% extra on top of their empty body weight (for a female) and the last one went up on a thermal then easily dodged out of the way of an incoming and very aggressive Wedge-tailed eagle....so I agree with Gerry

The wildlife research folks use 3% of body weight as the customary guideline for avian studies. The plan is that this will not affect mortality, breeding success, or other data.
