The female flies at around 2lb 6oz and has taken a wide variety of quarry. One thing about her was before the hallux was damaged, most things she caught, she held. I bought her off a backyard breeder who hunted her mother and she too was apparently a good hawk. If I chose a good male I think she would produce a decent hawk.

I never considered one of the clubs. I knew in the past they had breeding programs, but just didn't think they still did it. I've not been a member of a club for many years....

How does that work? Do I donate the female and get a youngster in return?

Cheers for the comments

David

I meant to say that I'm not motivated by money. My concern is with the wellbeing of my female and any youngsters produced.
I would consider breeding off her only because I think she is a good hawk.

Cheers

Because has youve said, the smaller goshawks just are. Its a personal opinion rick, but for me, she would be quicker and more stylish. Better hunting hawk all day long.

I think the Welsh Hawking Club still does, may be worth contacting Colin Asquith about it.

The question is if I did breed from her would I be stuck with the young or have difficulty selling them?
Just thought I'd ask the question.

Hello David,
You could wait until she has laid her first egg then start to inseminate her, you will most likely miss egg 1&2 there will be a good chance three and four will be fertile giving you a 50/50 chance of what ever sex you chose to keep to fly if they hatch and rear ok, if you have a surplus Eyass you could offer it to the supplier of the semen or offer it to someone to fly (as money making is not your intention ) or keep it as a spare for later in the season when someones hawk is electricuted, hits a fence, gets killed by a fox, dies of asper or gets hit by a train, or bounces off a window or any other mis demeanor that happens every year to some unfortunate soul flying a goshawk, size wont matter only the smile you put on their face when you offer it to them to get through the season.
Good luck with your breeding if you lived closer i would send you some semen for her for free.
regards
Keith

A Gos is a Gos. It's what you do with it that matters. To say , for example , that Finnish x German is the best is nonsense, although it has every chance of being top notch if you put the work in.

Well said, to many people buy birds that are currently trending, and get sucked into big is better blah blah, fly it hard, fly it to a good standard, and above all be happy in yourself, surely you fly a hawk or falcon because you love the sport, regardless of what everyone else might be doing.
