Thanks for your reply Mick, ill give you a bit more background on the bird he was one of two males collected from Germany last year he flew at 6lb- 8oz most of the time but there was a window of 6lb-7oz to 6lb-11 1/2oz. he finished the season with a modest bag of 17 head with 4 different species. The moult has been very slow he only dropped 6 wing feathers & one tail feather he was moulted on the block about 7lb-12oz to 8lb-00 with daily handling hooding & weighing.

30/10/13 temp 3c weight 7lb-0 7/8oz at 7-00am fed 3.5 doc 3 1/2oz gutted & cut in half lightly soaked in water.

Call offs on 12mm rope.

1st, very prompt at 28yds he landed on the ground next to me, but jumped up for his reward.

2nd, took longer around 30sec but landed on the fist for half a chick, same distance as before.

3rd, quicker at 28yds fed half a chick came to fist.

4th, very prompt at 28yds fed half a chick came to fist.

5th, quicker at 28yds fed half a chick came to fist.

6th, quicker at 28yds fed half a chick came to fist.

Hooded after each flight & returned to starting perch, also use a shepherds whistle for the call off. The hood is removed by my wife before each flight, the line is attached to a small block between the starting perch and myself.

Third day of rope training, 31/10/13. temp 14c weight 7lb-0 3/8oz at 6-30am fed 3.5 gutted day old chicks (wet) 3 1/2oz. Time restraints this morning and it was raining.

Call offs on 12mm rope which got rather wet.

1st very prompt at 25yds fed one gutted chick.

2nd very prompt at 30yds fed one gutted chick.

3rd prompt at 35yds fed one gutted chick.

4th took 40 sec at 40yds fed half a gutted chick.

We all got rather wet by the time we got to four call offs and it was rather windy so i ended it there before it went pear shaped.

I think you've made a good point there which maybe pretty obvious but some may not pick up on it. That is to stop when the going is good ending on a positive, especially when conditions aren't brilliant! It really helps to speed this process along!

Looking forward to following your diary for the rest of the season.

4th day of rope training on 12mm line. Raining again & Bolts at the same weight.

1/11/13, temp 11c weight 7lb-0 3/8oz at 6-45am fed 3 doc & chick leg/head (wet), chicks gutted & cut in half 3 1/4oz

1st call off very prompt at 40yds but barely made it to the glove had to lower it, reward 1/2 a chick.

2nd at 37yds took 20 sec & still had to lower the glove, reward 1/2 chick.

3rd at 37yds took 2 minutes, put 1/2 chick on the ground this had the desired affect, jumped up for chick leg.

4th at 37yds took 70 sec, put 1/2 chick on the ground from the out set, picked up with chick head.

5th at 37yds took 85 sec, put 1/2 chick on the ground & he landed 3yds short of his mark, jumped up for final half of chick.

On the recalls where it took him longer to come he was more interested in the rabbits hopping about in the cover at the edge of the field, so it just made me realize he's still got a lot of weight to loose, to bring him down to last years hunting weight.

2/11/13 Perfect morning sunshine and a light breeze temp 10c.

7lb-00 at 6-50am fed 3 doc gutted 2 7/8oz & lightly soaked afterward

call offs on 12mm rope.

1st 38yds took 45 sec, only just made the fist reward 1/2 chick.

2nd 40yds took 2 min, but made better height to land on the glove reward 1/2 chick.

3rd 40yds took 5 1/2 min but made even better height the strongest flight to day fed 1 chick

4th 40yds took 3 1/2 min had to lower glove for him to make it fed 1 chick.

There didnt seem much point in doing any more and prolonging the agony he spent a lot of time just taking in the scene looking this way and that every where bar me i'm sure he was enjoying himself he was very relaxed and handled very well.

3/11/14 very strong winds temp 7c.

weight 6lb-15 1/4oz at 7-00am fed two & half day old chicks gutted & lightly soaked in water 2 1/2oz more rope training on 12mm line.

1st 40yds call took 5 sec only just made the glove reward 1/2 chick

2nd call took 5 sec landed 3yds short then ran the rest of the way reward 1/2 chick.

3rd call took 1 min & 10 sec landed 5yds short & ran the rest of the way reward 1/2 chick.

4th call took took 40 sec landed 10yd short & walked the rest of the way reward 1/2 chick.

5th call took 50 sec so used the lure ( Falcon lure ) he didn't hesitate on producing this placed 1/2 chick on the lure with gloved hand, he still landed 10yds short but ran to the lure, ate his reward & then killed it, once he realized there was no more food jumped up for tid bit. I have noticed if you shorten the distance by only a few yards he will still land short of the mark when he thinks he's done enough, so once iv decided on a distance i try to hold my ground.

Glad things are coming along. Please don't take this the wrong way or if I'm telling grandma how to suck eggs tell me

But I found with Elsa that doing a hard rope session then giving her a day off then a hard rope session and so on brought her into fitness much quicker! It's like when you go to the gym the day after your sore and don't really won't to do a hard workout! Once the fitness is there then consecutive days aren't to much of a problem. Since doing this the last few seasons it works really well! I know every bird is different but it might be worth a go.
