I cut slots in both top and bottom but I wouldn't cut them all the way along as I think it can cause weakness near the eyelet.

Another thing that I do is when I get the correct size I then make a template out out plastic, (margarine tubs come in handy)

I cut a six inch piece of stiff card [cornflake box] depth your choice and wrap around a bic pen to get the correct diameter (female harris) then put the eyelet holes in and test for a nice feel on the pen and then cut as in post #7
Works for mine...as above !

Right ordered a stitched pair of Aylmeri from Ashley Clarke, to use as a template

Here is my 1st attempt ( unstitched ) Ashleys is the one on the top






a few more goes and hopefully we are good!
