Default Red Tail hawk ready for manning ?

Hello All

Looking for some information/advice on a rescued Red Tail we have had for the last 2 months

She is currently free lofted and has never been manned as previous owner told us she was aggressive and attacked him whenever he entered the aviary

She has never shown me aggression and has just started to fly towards me and call when I enter the aviary for cleaning and feeding

Now we hadn't planned manning her but feel she may respond well if I put in the effort.

Would appreciate any help and confirmation that I'm reading the signs correctly as believe she is starting to trust me and hopefully ready for manning

Many thanks

? i'm confused by this post ,if you have no intention of manning her what on earth do you intend to do with her ? if its to keep her as a bird in a pen then you'd be better to move her on to a falconer as she is a hunting bird and deserves to be used as such
It is evident from your question you do not have a great deal of experience and whilst well meaning you would be better placed to put her into more experienced hands
You could man a redtail in a matter of days and loose shortly after if you know what your doing, trust is a very human view

The attacking of the previous owner is not unusual dependant on the age of the bird and time of year coupled with his aptitude or lack of it

Hi Thanks for the quick response

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I work at a rescue centre and the red tail was handed into us as it was claimed she was very aggressive but she has shown little sign of this.

We are hoping to use her for display and educational purposes and she will not be used for hunting.

Was looking for some advice as to whether members believed she was ready for manning any helpful responses would be appreciated

Your question is all too vague to be answered on a forum, and as Shaun mentioned, this is down to inexperience (which is of course fair enough).

I read in your intro that you work at an animal shelter. Just be aware that for a lot of hawks, being "rescued" is often a case of out of the frying pan due to the well meaning but inexperienced people that "give it a go and put the time in".

This is a very specialist field and if you want to train this hawk, you ought to spend a lot of time researching and gaining practical experience before attempting it.

Good luck,

Matt

As already stated this bird should go to someone with experience of Redtails that will fly and hunt the bird. Its not fair to keep her for educational/display purposes. She deserves to be flown and hunted to use her natural instincts for the purpose that they were designed for.
