Question A Question of Insurance

Although i haven't got a BOP yet and i'm still very new to the sport, i decided to see what land i could use close to where i live. I wrote letters to landowners explaining who i am and what i want to do (use land for flying/hunting etc when i get my BOP).
My thought process was: if i can't get permission then there isn't much point in getting a BOP and have nowhere to fly it!
This morning a letter pops onto my doormat from a local landowner who states that he would allow me to use part of his land but i must give him a copy of my 'public liability' insurance certificate.
I've looked through all of the books that i have and none of them mention 'public liability insurance' they do say about insuring your mews/equipment etc but nothing else.
Do you have to have this type of insurance, if so, where can you get it?
How many of you have it?

Sorry if this seems a daft question! E

Well done on getting land sorted before getting a bird!
BFC membership covers you for 3rd party insurance claims....so as to a question I believe you asked on another thread another good reason to join!

Hi Elaine,

Is a very good question!

I think BASC will cover you as well, as far as I know Golden Valley who insure birds of prey used to cover you for public liability as well but I think they stopped that a couple of years ago. It is a good idea to have it just in case anything unforceen happens.

Cheers,

SH

Default Don't use E&L!!!

whatever you do I don't recommend E&L Insurance.
I have had MAJOR problems with them over a very straightforward claim. Other forum members have had similar problems

Hi Elaine
This is not a daft question at all and many falconers often neglect this. I am a member of the BFC and the Countryside Alliance. I get £1million 3rd party cover with the BFC and £2million with the CA. This means you will also get some nice mags, field meets, and are supporting the sport rather than just paying out to an insurance company.
Good luck and well done on sorting out some land before getting a bird. Many don't even bother AFTER they have the bird!

BASC covers you for £5M public liability any one event. Policy states cover whilst hawking.
